And possibly the radio bands used.
3G came relatively late in Thailand. The 3g coverage in Thailand is mostly in metro cities and suburbs, rural areas will be 2G only.
Here is a list of coverage maps (as of 2012)
http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/topic/573846-what-works-where-…Just note that if you are using a Galaxy S2 of the Telstra or Vodafone variant (model number ends with a T) then it's a 850mhz phone and is not capable of receiving 900mhz 3G.
Thanks so much to you all for your help. As you have probably guessed I am not very tech savy. My mobile is GT-I9100, is that what you mean scrimshaw?

Your phone supports 900mhz 3g. Don't need a new phone.
As for coverage you will need to refer to the maps shown in the link and see if it includes the places you are visiting.
Why not take the phone into a Thai mobile shop and ask them to help? Explain where you will be going with the phone and SIM and they will tell you if you will have coverage and what the call charges are. Don't run out and change your phone before you get the facts.
- check your phone isnt locked to an aussie provider and can accept any simcard
- if your phone works in town but not in rural regions then its the network coverage not the phone.
- not sure if you cant make a call or cant access the intenet from your phone…I stuck a thai simcard in my aussie android phone while i was up in nakhon phanom isaan and while i could make calls, i had no internet package …
its about the carrier and the coverage in the area, not the phone.
