Secret but awesome places in Sydney and NSW

Hi guys,

I know, there are a lot of info about great places to see in NSW and Sydney in particular, but I'm interested in secret places. Like a roof or access to a top floor somewhere for free to enjoy the view. Or some unpopular but amazing places, hidden from other people.
Me and my fiance are going to spend 10 days in NSW and I want to surprise him with great places.

Thank you, ozfriends :)

If they told us they wouldn't be secret any more.

    • hopefully some people like to share them with us:)

Not sure when you're going but Cockatoo Island is really cool, take the ferry from Circular Quay, fun to explore, grab a coffee or drink at the Island Bar…might be a bit dreary in the colder months

    • Yeah, I put it in my list - somebody recommended it in another topic about Syd) thanks!

There are heaps of 'hidden' bars in Sydney, located all over the CBD in laneways, underground dens and tiny courtyards.

Here is a list of a just few of them, there's plenty more that are mentioned at the bottom of the list (I liked Grandmas and The Commons).

As for larger places to drink, The Winery in Surry Hills and the rooftop bar at The Glenmore in The Rocks offer more open and less claustrophobic spaces and offer very nice views of the city. I particularly like going to The Glenmore at around sunset as you get decent (albeit somewhat obstructed) views of the harbour. If you do go here, don't be put off by the rather shabby looking lower levels- the rooftop is very nicely done!

Another list for rooftop bars in Sydney.

    Enjoy your time here! :)

    • Thanks, that's a lot of handy info!
In brisbane we have only one rooftop bar, so in Sydney we are going there for sure:)

The sandstone pier on the western side of the harbour bridge has a museum that is $2 to visit. Interesting exhibit and top view. Don't be tricked into going to the Bridge climb people's more expensive pylon look out. Details here:
    http://library.thinkquest.org/25252/2.htm

  • That bridge museum URL says it is in the South Eastern pylon, not the Western side. The official (compared to the student) version is at http://www.pylonlookout.com.au/Visitor_frs.htm but it would seem that mskeggs hasn't been there for a long time or there have been recent massive price rises of 450% as it is now $11 for adults.
It'd be interesting to know from those who have been if it is worth that new price.

    • I haven't been up the museum for years, so it must have changed. Tripadvisor is griping that it costs more now too:
      http://www.tripadvisor.com.au/ShowUserReviews-g255060-d26432…

It's still free to walk across the bridge though! And when I said western end I meant the side leading to the western distributor - the side at the rocks, not the side near Luna Park.
If you are there anyway, go to the Glenmore Hotel which is just about next door and has a great roof top bar.

My hidden spot is the cafe in the supreme(?) court building.
Only law people know about it but its high up in the building overlooking Hyde Park and eastern suburbs and is open to the public.

    • So I can just come there and tell security that I'm going to the cafe? Will that work?
P.s. is that on Phillip Street?

      • You can just walk in like any other building from memory.
There are signs as to what floor its on so just walk to the elevators and push the right button.
(Its been 5 years or so since I last went there)

  • Maybe try some suburban food experiences? Sydney has some amazing local quisine made with top quality ingredients traditionally.

    Chinese in Ashfield or Eastwood
    Vietnamese in Cabramatta/Marickville
    Lebanese/Turkish in Auburn
Italian in Haberfield (better than Norton Street, less touristy)
    Portugese in Petersham

    Just for a few ideas.
