What's the best fridge?

Hi there

Hubby and I have just bought a new house and are in the process of decking it out with furniture and appliances.

We have space for a dual door fridge in the kitchen and were curious to find out what's the best fridge money can buy?

What are good brands for fridges? Are dual doors or French door fridges better? Any advice would be appreciated.

  • Personally I would look most at the efficiency. A fridge is on all the time and the running costs will add up.

  • +2

In my experience, the best is one being sold 2nd hand by someody going overseas. These are often quite new, and the seller is motivated to get it sold ASAP.

  • For efficiency, the old school Top Freezer is the most efficient layout, cause the cold from the freezer helps keep the fridge cool or something.
As such, I wouldn't expect a French Door to be better.

    • The problem is our new place has a 2 door fridge space built into the cabinet. We've always been a single door fridge family. Hence why I need advice. Thanks for that though.

      • I'm been using 2 door fridge, would not go back "single door". They do consume a little more energy (but not that much if you have a look at similar size fridge)
All depend on your needs/preferences/budget… Do you need a larger freezer? want a bit of "luxury" add ice and water dispenser….

  • Not sure if LG still make them but there internet fridges would be the best money can buy.

    • Haha yeah my hubby did originally mention this, but I did read somewhere that LG and SAMSUNG are not that great. And I have been on the choice website. It seems Westinghouse, Fischer Paykell, Haier and Mitsubishi are much better.

Just not sure what models are good. Will try checking energy rating.

Consider checking out the Energy Star website to find out which fridges are the most energy efficient. Whilst they cost a bit more, it often works out cheaper after 5 or so years (assuming energy stays the same price).

    • Thanks I'm checking this out now.

  • Do you have plumbing to the fridge (for ice and water dispenser) ?
This Bosch fridge is pretty good, my wife wants one but we have a perfectly good F&P stainless that is still going strong after 6 years. There is a cashback at the moment too:

  • We just bought the F&P french door (RF610ADUX3) fridge and will be delivered this arvo. This one has got more usable space compared to others.

  • F&P!

search for RT edwards or good guys floor stock, look for last year model if they have any left over! = bargain!

  • My old F&P was pretty good, took about 13 years before something went wrong and it started freezing stuff in the back of the fridge.

Choice also do a round up of fridges every year or two. You'll have to pay cash to get the most recent report, or check out this thread: http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/57943 . Has a link to the 2011 report I believe.

  • In our experience, F & P appliances have a lifespan equivalent to an extended warranty, at best. Having said that, we once bought a top load washing machine based entirely on the performance my mother was getting from hers - same model. Ours died years ago and hers is still going strong, so clearly they're not all duds.

While looking at energy efficiency and reliability, I'd also recommend going instore and checking the internal layout for what best suits your requirements - fridges that look basically the same can vary quite a lot, spacewise, in the interior. If you have to remove all but 2 shelves to fit the sort of items that you tend to keep in the fridge, the amount of litres it supposedly holds is quite irrelevant, or if the fruit bins would hold a quarter of what you need…… etc, etc

  • +1

Fisher & paykel sucks . Go westinghouse

    • Agree about F&P refigerators.. Been looking at double door fridge and have decided on Kelvinator. One of the cheapest too.

Anyone experienced rust in the bottom of doors on samsung fridges?
