    That price is suicide…

    Oh gosh, Sony haven't learned.

  • +3

Poor broden could only afford a few ps4s at this price..

  • I've still got an unopened PS3 160GB from the $168 Dick Smith deal. I'm struggling to muster up much interest in these new consoles (PS3/720). It just looks like more of the same to me. Hopefully they will bring out something new for the launch that will blow everyone away.

Of course you're struggling to muster up interest, you haven't plugged it in yet.

    • that's eb games…?

      • true, but its going to be the same thread with the same comments just repeated. but lets see…

  • I haven't bought a console since the N64, everything is just a downgrade otherwise.

  • That is the preorder price, They simply put it that high in case Sony decide to release it with a price higher than the current predicted price. For example, If JB advertised it for $499, and Sony announced the RRP was $599, technically, people who had preordered could force them to sell it at their advertised price.

  • So what happens if the price is more than that?

    • Well the current estimated price will be $499, I think it will be bumped up to $599 due to Australia being screwed on pricing even with the strong dollar

  • how quickly we forget. I bought the PS3 on the day of release, it was $999. At the time this was a good deal as it was cheaper than buying a Blu Ray player and included one. I'm pretty sure my PS2 was around the same price when I bought it on the day of release. We don't think of $900 as a bargain for a console now because they are so cheap coming to EOL, pretty sure the Wii was $399 or $499 on release…….

This is true, but consumer electronics have come a LONG way since the release of the PS3. PCs are almost at the point of being given away in cereal boxes.

Sony may try to live in the past (they have tried many times before), but I don't think it will work for them.

Additionally the PS3 was actually a big deal hardware wise, with huge amount of R&D and new manufacturing (mostly the Blu-ray and CPU). The PS4 is barely different to a dell, so R&D and manufacturing costs and risks are very low.

  • I will laugh, when this monstrosity comes out with a release price of $1199 and the angry pre-order rants start getting posted.

  • I still don't see what people are getting all antsy pantsy with the new release console prices…. ever since consoles were introduced the prices have been $1k + and the same thing happens with EVERYTHING on initial release.

Buy now, spend a but load, buy later and save a but load…. it's simple or so I thought.

    • Except there hasn't been new PS/Xbox consoles in such a long time and the market has changed since then.

Just to add more to the discussion, I'd like to remind (or inform) people that the hardware was at least initially sold at a loss http://www.pcworld.com/article/127906/article.html; the basic plan from memory was to ensure that Blu-Ray players get installed in as many houses as possible, this was during the height of the Blu-Ray/HD-DVD war. Obviously we know how that turned out. On the other hand the PS3 is still an impressive machine, Far Cry 3 and the Uncharted series both have awesome graphics, not expected from hardware that is now 7 years old. This is either a tribute to the machine or the programmers of the games, maybe both.

We also have Zavvi putting up their price for the pre-orders $399.99 pound = $592.78 AUD. http://www.zavvi.com/ps4-hardware/ps4-new-sony-playstation-4… This seems to close to what the PS3 cost on its launch in the UK.

For me really I don't care about having the latest system, it's all about the games. Despite being a hardcore PS2 gamer when the PS3 came out I wasn't interested until God of War 3 came out in 2010. The system had been out for roughly 4 years by that stage, and I spent that time playing more games in the PS2 library. I'd expect the same will happen with the PS4, I'll simply wait until either the next God of War or Uncharted game comes out before forking out some cash.

  • So the question is should we import from the UK rather than buy in AU if there is a massive price difference? Other than the Region 2 DVD locking will it matter much? Australia seems to be considered Europe for Sony so I don't think there'd be region issues…

Generally I prefer to buy my console locally so I can access local services and play local DVDs (wasn't an issue obviously for bluray) etc and just import games.

    thoughts?

    • Both prices are pure guess work, so there is no point getting ahead of yourself. EU usually also gets screwed, so if you are going to import US/Japan is usually the way, but then there are blu-ray regioning issues.

Who knows what region locks the store/games will have. At any rate there is no point in ordering this now (not that I plan to order it at all).

      • Yeah wasn't planning on ordering one until a month or so before the release. Need to know the deals before decided who I plonk my $$$ down with.

What a rip off compared to the wii u, more than double, also wii u and ps4 isn't that much of a difference.

    • Lol

      • lol indeed, the WiiU is not even on comparison with a PS3/360.

Also it's selling like crap, even the Vita outsold it last week.

        • WiiU is not even on comparison with a PS3/360.

Why do you think this? Only thing against the Wii U is it can't play generic media like DVDs/Blu Ray. And of course there are just less games currently.

        • Well there is two very good reasons straight off the bat. Give it a few months and Nintendo will be supporting it like a single mum the same way they have to single handedly support all of their consoles. Graphically yes it is comparable to the current gen consoles but it is again way too late to the party and the Wii burned so many gamers last time that we are seeing the fall out from that now in terms of sales.
At the end of the day its a console with no games and Nintendo as good as they are with their first party stuff don't have a clue about networks, they are stuck in the nineties.

        • Give it a few months and Nintendo will be supporting it like a single mum the same way they have to single handedly support all of their consoles.

I think this is your first reason, and I assure you that the Wii U will see more support than the PS3 in light of the PS4 announcement.

it is again way too late to the party

Might be your second, but I don't see how this makes it hard to compare to a PS3, which is the point.

the Wii burned so many gamers last time

Or this could be your second except that:

1: I'm not sure how people were burned
2: This has nothing to do with how the Wii U compares to the PS3

At the end of the day its a console with no games

This is the first (sort of) valid point made. Does the PS3 have a better games collection, absolutely, but that isn't really a fair comparison in this situation.

Nintendo as good as they are with their first party stuff don't have a clue about networks

This makes no sense to me at all. They have lots of very functional network systems in place. Their store isn't great though (at least on the Wii), perhaps you mean that?

they are stuck in the nineties.

I fail to see how. They've done far more innovation that Sony or MS in the last 10 years.

        • Sorry, you misunderstand. I am saying that you gave two good reasons straight off the bat in you first response. Also their store is part of their network is it not?
Also if Nintendo are so innovative how come they are so late to finally trying to make online gaming more accessible to their consoles? All of the big three innovate in their own ways. I'm not looking to get into a prolonged argument here and tbh my original comment was a bit tongue in cheek to respond to the guy who thinks that the WiiU will be similar to PS4. I buy all consoles myself, have done since N64 but I won't be buying a WiiU. If I want to play a Nintendo game I'll play a 3DS.
