  • Isn't ground flax seeds for a source of Omega-3 better for you?

    • why?

No. Flax seed is basically just fish oil for vegetarians.

Flax seed lacks pre-formed DHA and EPA. They are the 2 main beneficial essential omega-3 fatty acids.

Flaxseed is only good in comparison to omega-3 foods and vegetable seed oils (like walnuts, leafy greens, canola oil) as a source of ALA.

The problem with ALA is that it has to be converted into DHA and EPA in order to see any of the omega-3 benefits.

Because of this, you need to have higher doses of flax seed in order to match smaller doses of fish oil. Usually it's something like 6-7g flaxseed is equal to 1g fish oil which makes fish oil a lot more practical. Some people have trouble converting the ALA and may need up to 10g flax to equal 1g fish oil and others won't be able to process it at all. Studies I've come across have shown females can convert it more easily than males and the fit convert it more easily than the unfit but there are also other factors affecting the conversion outcome unique to each individual.

I also remember reading somewhere that high flaxseed intake can increase the risk of prostate cancer due to the ALA promoting tumor growth.
