Too easy to accidentally neg on an iPhone - need solution

I like to give credit where credit is due by ensuring I vote. However, when voting on someone's comment I go to press the + on my tiny iPhone screen and end up negging people by accident.

Do others have the same issue?

Would like to hear possible solutions.

One solution could be an "are you sure" step before a neg is applied.

I vote on my phone but have never accidentally negged someone.

It's my pet complaint. There is no compelling reason to put the two buttons next to each other.

You can undo a neg though, but IMO that's a bandaid solution.

    • +4

      I very carefully gave you a +

You can undo a neg (I have had to do that a lot lately) but when you undo you can not then vote +

And you can only un-neg someone if you notice in the first hour. I did not realize I negged someone this morning and then could not un-neg later. Had to give them an apology so they did not wonder what crazy person would neg their good comment.

      • On the positive side, I'm supposing a lot of people have gotten accidental +ves ;)

        • not really. the placement of the -V is where the X of the user profile is.

I think an "are you sure" step is a great idea. Besides the issue you note it also might make someone think twice before negging. There seems to be a lot of negging of comments that don't really deserve it, in my opinion.

personally, I think that would get annoying after a while, i think a more spacious layout would be the real solution

      • +1

Do you neg that often that it would get annoying? More space would help.

        • Not personally , but I can see others complaining about it

I like the way chrome handles this, if it is unclear which of two items you may have pressed it zooms in on those two for you to pick. Thus I never have this problem. Doesn't mean that a change wouldn't help though.

    • Are you talking Chrome on Android or iPhone? I just went to give you a + on my iPhone and Chrome still resulted in a neg. No zooming occurred on this iPhone.

Also tried to give 3 other + below with same result.

      • Didn't even know you could get it on iPhone. I did hear (but have not verified) that the renderer is locked on iOS, so there may be a lot that 'replacement' browsers can't actually do, just move buttons around.

    • Very handy on my N7, but since Chrome is extremely crappy on my SGS2, it can't be used where it's needed most. Here's hoping they fix it soon.

  • Happened before with me. Just revoked the neg. not worried if there is a fix for it or not.

    Get a better phone?

    • Ghettoblaster size? It's to do with the size and proximity of the icons. Also could happen, though less likely, on a desktop. Zoom in you say. Sure, that's what I do but I shouldn't have to do headstands for a UI defect.

      • As mentioned above, chrome handles this problem very well (ozbargain is hardly the only place with adjacent links).

        • +1

That's nice for the desktop, in fact I'm Chroming right now but I'm stuck with whatever browser is on the smartphone. I have even declined updates to FB and Twitter (which are useless to me) because they don't actually update the factory version but take up user flash memory, which I'm short of. Yeah, I should get a better phone too, but this one works fine most of the time and I'm an OzB'er.

        • They're talking about Chrome on Android, not the desktop.

        • Sounds like all good with Chrome on Android. However Chrome on iPhone still has the same problem as Safari.

Ha ha. Took a while for the first iPhone hate comment. Was expecting it straight after posting. :)

      • -1

        ;)

  • IMO the mobile site needs a bit of a facelift in general. The RSS feed in 'Live' is cut in half on my GS2, making it virtually unusable, and navigating through the mouse-over menu can be a pain.
Relatively small issues, sure, but any progress would be appreciated.

This explains the negs I get.

  • This issue has already been reported before. For example.

The difficulty now is that people are expecting the same functionality as the desktop site on a small screen. As you might have aware that OzBargain mobile site is serving very similar page with almost-full functionality. That certainly makes some page elements a bit squeezed, which in this case — the +1/-1 vote buttons for comments.

A few suggestions have been raised in the past.

    • More space between the vote buttons? (making the page more squeezed).
    • Putting votes between the +1/-1 buttons (buttons won't line up vertically).
    • A confirmation box before the vote? (different behaviour than desktop site).
    • Making the buttons bigger? (again need more space, and we are also thinking of trying out icon fonts to get scalable icons)
    • Or maybe we can reduce the functionality by remove the comment vote altogether on mobile site?

Yes we knew the issue. However it's not that trivial to fix it. We might trial a combination of solutions. Just that out of a zillion other things we need to do, this hasn't really been a priority (for me at least). Now as we know how many are annoyed by wrongfully negged by mobile users, we might try to get the changes in there sooner :)

    • Thanks Scotty. I understand it may not be top priority. I would not of even raised the issue if I had not accidentally negged at least a dozen people and as you know it can really offend people.

Is adding an "are you sure" step to neg on both desk top and mobile an issue?

Just have a think about solutions and add it to your long to do list!

For short term, possibly could we delete the neg comment feature (keep +) for mobile? People could still neg the deal and they could still reply to comments if they don't agree.

Just an idea, but you would know what is possible. May be get some feedback from the proficient comment neggers. What do they think?

    • I don't think the solution needs to be so complicated. you could just slightly adjust the layout. move the + above the little square user photo and leave the - below. no space lost.

      • Huh? On mobile site we don't even show user photo in comments…

        • sorry my bad, thought you guys were talking about the deal +-.

you could still do this —> [+] +3 votes [-]

        • I've raised in the parent comment. Problem for this approach is that the buttons won't line up vertically, unless you give the vote count a fixed with space. Anyway. That looks weird (and I've tried).

        • +3

          what about this

          + - button

        • Okay that's one interesting suggestion assuming the vote count area is fix-width. Thanks.

  • +1

I have the same problem on my android phone. Please make the buttons bigger or move them much further apart.

    • +3

      …SSSShhhhhhhhhh don't tell them,

Mods please delete this comment, the problem is only on iOS ;-) Android is fine……

      • (deliberate plus)

      Shaw… "Get a better phone"

The reality is you just need smaller fingers - pencil sharpeners can work wonders.

      • You speak from experience? :P

  • -3

Stylus, you need one of those small stylus things that work very well on small screens etc.

    something like this: http://www.bigw.com.au/electronics/computers-office/computer…

millions of them on ebay as well maybe

    • +2

Meh, it's faster to just zoom in and use a finger rather than carry around a stylus that take time to pull out of the pocket/case and can get lost.

  • +4

Guilty. I've accidentally negged a comment on my android before. I had to convince myself that what the poster said was actually awful.

  • I use the pc site on my iPhone . To vote, I double tap the box on the right, it zooms in, then scroll to vote and hit the correct button every time.

  • Okay. Currently I've implemented two solutions — both are in my local repository and ready to be deployed.

    • Solution 1: Putting the fix-width'ed vote count between the +1 and -1 buttons. This can be re-styled, but still does not look right with anonymous browsing (when we do not display the votes buttons). Also uses more horizontal width which might overlap with the username / datetime.

    • Solution 2: Replace +1 and -1 buttons with a drop down box with +1 and -1 votes. This uses minimum screen estate, but requires extra click to vote. Adds a bit complexity to Javascript as well.

Anyway personally I'll go for Solution 2. We can get this uploaded onto the site (+ quite a few other updates) later this week.

i wouldnt do a drop down box.

It seems to have changed on my iphone, the little x on the user profile 'pop up' is now below the neg votes. where it was hovering over the neg vote

      • i wouldnt do a drop down box.

        Why?

        • Well… I guess I don't like that idea. :)

        • I dont like the pop out window because as you say its an extra click. I much prefer method 1. If you keep the button the same size as it was then it wont need to be any more wider overall. The gap createt by the vote countis sufficient to prevent hitting - instead of + and + instead of -.

    • Thanks Scotty.

Though there is an extra step, I have not yet negged someone by accident.
So looks like a reasonable fix. Appreciate your effort.

Thanks for fixing this for us. You are a legend!

  • Why not just give a 1 minute timer after voting where you can change your mind?

It would solve issues on phones as well as accidentally voting negative on your computer.

    • You already can remove a comment vote though.

    • But as noted by deal88, you can remove it but not reverse it.

  • Scotty i see the voting method has been changed and the buttons have been moved to a popout window. Unfortunately it doesnt fix the issie bexause the plus and minus buttons are stilll too close to each other and its too easy to clixk the wrong on.e

This just makes voting a 2 click process instead of one but the issue wasnt accidental clicks while reading the page, it was clicking the wrong button because they are tiny and theres only a small gap between thm.

I appreciate all the effort you put into the site and youve made one of the best and most useful aussie sites around.

Personally I think it's made a huge difference. I haven't accidentally voted on a comment since this change.

      • I have a thought. Maybe leave the dropdown box but move one button to the other side so it is:

        Comment
        [plus button] this comment
        This comment [negative button]

And may be chane the wording for comment since it sounds a bit superfluous having it 3 times. Maybe change it to thumb down and thumb up? Please dont use like and dislike.

    • This change has made a huge difference for me on my iPhone. Before implementation, I had about a 70% accidental neg rate, after Scotty's change (which I was some what sceptical about), I have had zero accidental negs.

So the change had worked well for me.

  • Yeah we are still optimising. This week we've updated how the hover menu works at the top of the page so it would work better with touch devices. At least my Android tablet now works (touch once to bring down the menu, and again on the same link to click through), but we have reports saying that Win8 / IE10 is still work registering the touch correctly.

As of still-small buttons in the popup that should be easy to fix. I'm usually testing the mobile site with my Galaxy Nexus (4.65" screen) so might not work too well on small screens.
