it depends whether or not you want to leave the airport…
you can stay in the airport - there is airport hotel and the abundance of shopping centre

    or

you can take a cab to the city - do what you need to do - and get back to the airport and stay (or not to stay) at the airport hotel (and continue shopping and wondering around the airport) - There is plenty of facilities for free massage by the machine or shower facilities

    check out www.changiairport.com

but if you really really really want to stay in a hotel in the city (why would you need transfers? train is cheap!) there are plenty of options.. Ibis hotel to start with

If you really really want to stay in a hotel but it is located at the airport.. crowne plaza singapore is located literally next to the airport… but it is a little expensive and a proper hotel..

so it all comes down to - what you want, how much you want to spend..
if you are on a tight budget.. then dont stay in a hotel - sleep on empty chairs
if budget is not an issue, then consider spendign your time either in the airport or go to city
if you have plenty of budget then stay in a propoer hotel next to the airport. The airport - either before or after immigration point is a City in itself..
THe singaporean people do go to the airport to eat there / play there.. plenty of restaurants or foodcourt

  • had similar issue to you a few months ago… about 16 hrs transit.
had the family, so checked into a 2 star hotel halfway to main part of city (Joo Chiat).
one of the Hotel 81 chain hotels. Cost A$60 after discounts at the time. From memory a taxi was about A$15 each way.
Food available down on the streets - basic but adequate. Shopping minimal.
Would do it again if in same situation.

  • Note there is a pool at Changi for passengers, and there is a free Singapore tour for transit passengers.
Plus you can rent a bed by the hour in the airport.
If you do travel into the main part of town, it is about $35.
Huh, I just looked at your username and remembered you asked for advice to book for your Mum.
In that case, I would suggest a hotel as close to Changi as possible to minimise hassles.

    • thank you for your understanding. Have you try any hotel in Sing yet?

      • I haven't got any recommendations, as I have only stayed in large family hotels.
        This website: http://www.coupark.com/
Collects all the Groupon/Scoopon type deals in Singapore, so you might find a special on accommodation - but be aware also that hotels in Singapore can be expensive.

  • If you are travelling with Singapore Air check their stopover deals - you can get a good hotel at a decent rate including transport.
