Either handheld or car mounted, looking for a cheapy to use on the occasional offroad day trip.
Any suggestions? Did a search but all the deals are expired, and can;t see any current deals at Repco, Dick Smith etc.

Thanks for your reply,
I'm probably only going to use it to shout abuse at my brother whenever we do a bit of 4wd'ing on day trips with the family, and then not touch it again for a month or two until the next run. Which is why I'm leaning towards just grabbing a handheld, although preferably one I can plug a mic into. And saving my pennies for other goodies like a canoe or a dinghy.
Will take a look at the pamphlet and keep an eye out for GME gear.
Thanks again

Doing a bit more reading up on handhelds something like the GME TX6100 is a nice unit, http://www.gme.net.au/products/radio-communications/uhf-477m… and you can use an adaptor to mount a high gain aerial to it (ie one you put on the car)
With UHF's, its a case of you get what you pay for. A handheld (even a 5w unit) your not going to get fantastic range out on the road (on the flat open area maybe 5-6km, hills 1-2km) in car mounted it really depends on the aerial you have fitted to how far it receives.
I always reccomend GME radio's for anything UHF, we have them in all of our work trucks (+ i have one on the motorbike and in the car) they are simple to use and setup, they are extremely durable, the cost is resonable and they just last, we have GME's that are over 10 years old still in service and work a treat. They do several designs, some are for DIN mounts (ie same size as aftermarket radio's so if you have a spare DIN slot then they could be the go) or units you flat mount on a surface to units you can mount under the seat and everything is controlled by the handset (good for stealth and clean installs) I have the TX4500 in the car and truck.

Good brochure that shows you the different types of antenna's and how they work in regards to dbi gain. I would reccomend getting a whip with the screw on base and amp, then you can just unscrew the aerial when driving around town to stop it being nicked.
