What to do with faulty product just after warranty expires?

Hi guys, I bought a GPS navigator from Goodguys little over 13 months ago for $185. They offered me extended warranty but I didn't take it. Recently the power connection became loose and it sometimes shuts down while I am driving. Also it takes ages to calculate or recalculate. I have updated the software. How do I go about this now? Will I be able to take it to Goodguys for repair?

  • Go ask to get it repaired, if they don't budge, try the usual CTTT/VCAT/equivalent in your state?

  • Fair Trading believe products should have an implied warranty which means something longer than the exact 12 month one offered. Call them.

    • Yep, something about 'fit for purpose'. If it's reasonable to think the product would last several years then they 'should' cover it. Good luck getting them to though!

  • Will I be able to take it to Goodguys for repair?

Probably cheaper to buy a new one.

Unless you were thinking they'll do it for free?

In any case they are a retailer, not the manufacturer.

  • Buy the same one again, wait a month, and return the faulty one.

  • Goods bought since 1 January 2011 are covered by the new Australian Consumer Law (consumer guarantees):
    http://www.accc.gov.au/content/index.phtml/itemId/1023610

Goods bought before 1 January 2011 are also covered (but by the old laws - statutory warranties).

Read the guide and follow the recommended steps to lodge a complaint.
