Intriguing, no?

They're probably not gonna make much of an impact with the low end budget consumer segment, but if they can get the build quality and reliability good, then they could be onto a winner. And the thing's they are saying about after sales support is very true. It'll be interesting to see how they go.

Any thoughts or comments? Anyone used a Blackbook laptop??

  • Not too sure about support, especially when it compares with Apple. One thing about Apple's support is — no matter where you bought your Mac or iDevice from, you can walk into any Apple Store and talk to the guys behind Genius Bar. Whether they are actually genius is another matter, but the fact that you can go into any Apple Store to talk to someone can be appealing to some people.

Whereas MLN — that's pretty much Melbourne metro only, isn't it? So how can you do "Face to Face Warranty and Support" to the wider Australia? Not much hope either if your laptop needs a service when you are on the business trip in another country.

As of the laptops themselves, do a search on Venom Blackbox on MLN reveals that they start at $1,799 to $3,999. Specification is not bad. For the $1,799 cheapest model Venom Venom Blackbook 15 (A0118) Performance Notebook, you get:

    • i7-3630QM
    • 8GB RAM
    • 1TB HDD
    • GTX670MX 3GB
    • 15.6" Full HD
    • Blu-Ray Writer

Range topping 15.6" (at $3,899) comes with:

    • 32GB RAM by Corsair
    • 256GB mSATA + 480GB Intel SSD 520
    • GTX680M 4GB

Very much gaming-oriented. That pretty much write me off their potential market :)

  • here's how it works

they put out feelers by globalsources or whatever for a new design that hasnt hit our shores yet

they find a unit that they find marketable

give it a marketing name and sell it

    nothing more

  • Intriguing, no?

not really. what's different about australia from the rest of the world that requires an australian-designed laptop? still made in taiwan/china i assume

  • i get the feeling that mln paid for some cash for comment for that article

    its advertising isnt it?

    no critical anaylsis

    • +1

I can assure you PC & Tech Authority do not accept cash for comment.

Since we (I wrote the piece, by the way, and yeah, I really do like the look of the laptop so far) hadn't heard of MLN before meeting them it seemed a good chance to introduce our readers to what they're trying to do, ahead of our actual review. This is just a news piece - the benchmarking comes later :)

      • You hadnt heard of MLN before meeting them, really? doesnt inpire confidence that you know much about the market. Just sayin.

      • haha you certainly get around Dave ;) I like your magazine btw. Keep up the good work.

  • No thanks, working in an enterprise supporting tech i like there to be at least some support beyond repair. ie drivers etc that get updated and actually work together.

  • its an entertainment pc for enthusiasts

just like clevos… it has no bearing on the market as a whole

  • I like the laptop, just don't like that price.

This is just another rebadged clevo. Affordable laptops have had them for ages sold as metabox. The model above is the P150EM.

I have one myself with the 7970M GPU. For the price you won't get much better specs than clevos especially in the 15" range where they are the only brand I know of to offer flagship GPUs in a 15" shell (GTX 680M and AMD 7970M)

Quality and build is average but performance wise I am very happy being able to play nearly every game on highest settings at 1080P
