Been a long time customer at Blancharu, and a fan of Chef Haru's food. His restaurant Blancharu is relaxed and unpretentious, yet the food is fine-dining quality at a fraction of the price.

If you haven't tried it, the groupon deal is excellent value at $69/2p or $135/4p or $199/6p. The 5 course degustation is usually $59/pp without drinks.

Menu for this particular deal:

  • Crown of crab and eggplant caviar tower, tomato vinaigrette
  • Chilled potato and leek soup with truffle jelly and egg kasutera
  • Saikyo Miso Marinated Gindara (Black Cod)
  • Roasted quail with gourmet salad and Madeira sauce
  • Dessert du jour
  • Glass of wine; choice of:
    • Saint Clair Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2012
    • Dal Zotto King Valley Riesling 2012

Voucher is valid until 7 May 2013, but bookings must be made by 6 Apr 2013. It can be used Mon-Sat for dinner.

Service has been a bit hit and miss over the years, and they had a new head waiter last year. It's not bad, just not as polished and knowledgeable as you'd hope for the quality of the food. We had a couple of experiences where the coffee that was ordered to go with dessert was forgotten etc.

Parking is a pain and the carpark building nearby is ridiculously expensive - would recommend that you take the train, it's a 5 min walk from Kings Cross station.

Their lunch deal that has been on for a while is also great value - $30 for 3 courses that you can select from their menu. No voucher necessary for this.

Considered it, but wasn't too interested in the menu so I gave it a miss.

    • Sorry I must have updated the deal with the menu just as you posted the comment. Forgot to include it initially.

      • Hehe, that is OK. I removed it from my comment :)

  • Here is perth $59 pp for 5 courses, without wine (their normal price), would be an absolute rock bottom bargain.

When I go to the eastern states, the prices feel like Bali. Wish I could use this, but I doubt I'll be in Sydney until my cruise in December.

    • Perth does sound expensive. :( Sydney is not always cheap for food, but Blancharu is quite a bit cheaper than other fine-dining options because as it's purposely set up to be more like a cafe setting, and the location is not that central.

      • not just expensive. arrogant and clueless customer service as well:

        • Hopefully that's not the typical experience at Perth restaurants :(

        • personally, i wouldn't know anymore. largely gave up on dining out since the late 90's. but hear a lot of anecdotes from work colleagues and friends who do.

  • Went couple of times, paying full price. Nice french-japanese place. Used to have SMH One Hat when it first opened but seem to be getting less recognition last 2 years.
for $769 with wine is an absolute bargain
But yes, parking is impossible and I don't want to train to cross.

    • What $769?? Did I miss something here? @_@

      • Probably just a typo. Meant to be $69 for two with wine.

  • They also serve great ramen at lunch. shhhhh, keep it quiet! Don't want people ruining it with queues, like gumshara!
