  • Le Merdien in KL is about $100 per room per night, sleeps two adults and should be able to do a roll away bed. They have adjoining rooms. We got a suite plus adjoining standard room and stuck four young kids in the king size bed. Very high standard, and great pool. Next door to Sentral station so easy access to the airport.
Not quite as central to some KL malls etc, but a short cheap cab ride.

  • if you're thinking of shopping and food, look for places in Bukit Bintang. Which is where a few of the major shopping centres (lot 10, pavilion etc.) are.

I stayed at Dorsett Regency which was ~100 for double queen which should fit a family of 4. Hotel staff we're very nice and had all your basic amenities. Although their rooms need a bit of a reno and reclean, just consider the fact that you're staying at one of the cheapest hotels with a great location because next door is the Ritz Carlton and the other side has the Westin and close by is the JW Marriott.

A good trick with the Dorsett, is to quickly run out of the hotel and into the Ritz Carlton, use their passageways and walk in air-con into the Starhill Gallery (rich stuff mall -> Gucci etc.) then from there you can exit, cross a road, and quickly enter into the other shopping malls like Pavilion.

And since you're near the Pavilion make use of their passageways (with Air-Con) that takes you from Bukit Bintang to KLCC (Aquarium, Petrona Towers, Large Garden, Convention Centre). I didn't know that and kept spending money and time walking to the rail station in hot weather.

Also the Pavilion basement is great for food. Has alot of the traditional malaysian things that you may find in a DaiPaiDong or outdoor eatery, but in the cleanliness of a higher-class food court. Of course eating at a Dai Pai Dong or an outdoor eatery would be better, but if you cant handle the chances of uncleanliness then go Pavilion. Also if you want to eat in an air-con'd room ;)

    • Hmm…I'm feeling a little envious…whenever I go back to Malaysia, I rarely ever visit these places (if at all), since I'm with relatives most, if not all the time. Still haven't been to the Pavilion, or even Batu Caves.
