I don't understand what you're trying to do.

Watch out - another boat approaching our shores

    • I have been out of the country for 2 months and this is the first mention of 'boat people' I have heard in that time. You ended my streak, dammit!

Yeah, me neither. What have you been doing overseas that stopped the boats for the last few months?

  • What sort of passport do you have that entering and leaving Malaysia is a problem? At least this is my guess at what you are talking about, from your muddled and incomplete description.

    • I'm guessing he want's to leave and enter Malaysia by train(don't know where from), but for some reason wants to appear that he went by airplane.

      • Thailand and Singapore are the usual suspects. Also may be possible from Kalimantan, Indonesia. And as voteoften says, they're not going to be fussed over a first world visitor.

    • for many countries, you must have proof of onward passage otherwise you require a visa to enter the country.

many years back i went by train from singapore to bangkok. i was tired and i didn't realise you were supposed to get out a very short distance later after crossing the bridge into malaysia to fix up your passport. i just stayed on the train. then when i got to the thai border i had no paperwork in my passport. luckily they just stamped it there and let me on through.

      • That's something different, you were supposed to get a stamp in your passport when entering Malaysia by train, or you are there illegally. It is not an airport transit where legally you have not entered the country. Malaysia most likely would have given the stamp without any proof of onward passage. There is less incentive for a first world citizen to overstay in a developing country than the other way around. And even if you do, you are contributing to the economy so they would just slap you on the wrist and tell you to move on. I mean, how are you going to survive in the black economy without sticking out like a non-local?

As a matter of fact I haven't been asked for proof of onward passage, return ticket, or to show that I have money, cards, whatever, for a long long time even in first world countries, e.g. Europe. When you have a first world passport, they figure you have some means and people back home to vouch for you, true or not.

        • i've been quizzed at the brisbane international airport depatures when checking in with a one-way ticket to asia. they told me they would get fined a considerable amount for letting people travel to another country and got refused entry because they didn't meet entry conditions.

        • That's again something unrelated. OP probably wants to enter Malaysia from a neighbouring country by land and has a return ticket to Australia. Assuming he's posting from Australia. But we're guessing from his vague post.

  • They never ask at the airport. If you are on a first world passport they probably won't ask at a land based entry point either.

  • OP must be out of range/uncommunicable - havent heard from for over 2 1/2 hours.
Perhaps now communicating by cryptic message in morning paper.
Last seen treking thru jungles of Borneo.

      Now this is getting interesting.
Where's the OP - this could be the beginings of an intrigue travel adventure novel:

Opening Scene: Holding cell in SE Asian prison.
OP "But I never left the country, look, I still got my unused tickets, see? Check with the airline, I cancelled and I got a full refund. I'm not even out of pocket"
Interegator "Then how did you come to have this in your pocket when we picked you up?"
Close up of OP's teardrop. Fade out to dreamscene. Location: wide shot beach scene, night. Full moon dance party in full swing. Subwoofers booming. Man approaches camera….

      Man says to OP "….."

Anyone care to add the next dialouge and scene?

On the Next Episode of 'Banged Up Abroad'…

  • I entered Malaysia by train on a Aussie passport a few months ago. Had an Airasia ticket booked out, but nobody asked about it.
If you really want to, get a train ticket to SG from Johor Baru for a dollar or two, you can book online.
If you feel it has to be an air ticket, try tiger and air asia on a few different routes. I'd be surprised if you can't find an option for less than $15.

  • Just buy a business class ticket or a 'Full fare' ticket and read the fare conditions. Most of them allow allow refunds within a reasonable period of time.

As with the others above, over the past 10 years I have travelled around Asia a fair amount - the only times I've been questioned about return flights have been for Chinese visas (but that's a completely different story!!) and entering Japan via boat. Last time I flew Cairns - Japan I was also questioned by airline staff, who needed to see my return flight into Australia (even though the return was from Malaysia not Japan).

I wouldn't worry about it, but as per mskeggs, if you're really worried about it, book a train or bus ticket to Singapore (my ticket Singapore - Melaca was only $26, and it is cheaper to go the other way around).
