Extras as a percentage of the hardware you buy (smartphones and tablets)

After they buy a smartphone or tablet, most people buy extras such as cases, apps and so on.

For you, roughly how much are these "extras" as a percentage of the orginal cost of the phone or tablet?

For my work iPhone, I've just bought an armband from eBay for < $10 and for my work iPad, I've just bought a Geckogear case for $5. The extras % in my case would be around 1% each to date (if I had paid for the phone and tablet).

    • That was rude, Escimojoe…

and to answer your question ihbh, 1% sounds about right.

Rude but gotta say, I agree with him.

        • It's not rude. Read his previous posts, comments etc. This guy is trolling for free information for a purpose. It's not in the spirit of Ozbargain and you're just oblivious to it. Ozhunter..i accidentally negged you didn't mean to.

    • Just asking out of curiosity. Definitely not trying to get into the case manufacturing or similar business. Friends typically buy extras up to 20%.

    I"ll do a quick calc

Phone: Samsung SIII 32 GB $550

    Spare Batteries: $10
    Cases: $20
    Screen Protector: $1
    Apps, etc: $0
    Chargers: $5
    MicroSD(64gb): $60

    Extras: Roughly $100

So roughly 20%; I don't know how you guys got 1% though; seems really low.

However, I did notice that used iPhone/iPad as a comparison for yours; which
    1) Will most likely be more expensive than my S3
    2) Does not offer expandable memory (without that, my percentage would be around 6%)
    3) No 'replacable batteries'

    • It pays to be bargains savvy..or in my case, to know people who are:)..Thanks OZBARGAINERS!!!! Can't remember the last time I've bought something at RRP. Must have been before sept 2011

Yeah, the S3 at the time was quite cheap; was at around $600 or so at Kogan; and had a RRP of around $800. Found an Aus stock(by request) at eglobal for $550; which I considered quite cheap; as my friend ordered a 16gb S3 from Kogan at $500. So for $50 I got an extra internal 16gb as well as (possible) 1 extra year warranty

    • 2) Does not offer expandable memory (without that, my percentage would be around 6%)

Those are the biggest money burners

      Chargers: $5

Why do you need an extra charger for? O_O

      • It's just the USB to MicroUSB cables; you can never have too many; just have one in the car, other room computers, work and whatnot

        • True true, I'd say $3 until they break ($1 each) :)
Still, the biggest factor is the expandable storage for "accessories"

  • My phone was $799 or so and I have maybe $20 worth of apps, so about 2.503128911138924%, I can go to more decimal places if you need.

  • my friend lost her charger on an old samsng glaxy 5 and had to pay $30 for phone and car chargers!

No, just people who don't look in the right places.
