Should posts be considered a dupe after a few months?

Just a bit torn over posts being considered a dupe just because it was posted 2-6 months prior. I probably have seen it months before but forgotten within a week of posting. Now if someone posted a deal months later which might help people remember of a deal before it expires.Though my concern that it might help people save money later if someone posts the deal again. What are your thoughts? Should there be an expiry date on deals after a month or 2?

  • Just for the record, the duplicate posting guidelines. 6 months is the general guideline for duplicates.

The OP's example is this. The OP reposted this yesterday. As it's only 3 months old and is still active, it's a duplicate. I understand the point of view and we do want everyone to get deals but we need to decide on a blanket date. 6 months, 5 months, more, less?

My perspective is to point out the old deals. The $40 upgrade deal posted 3 months ago and was set to expire on 31/1. So we announced that it was ending on Facebook/Google Plus/Twitter, "sticky"ed the deal to the frontpage as well as put a notice on the frontpage news. We also suggest people to use the remind button or start a thread in the forum reminding people that a deal is still on. For the example above, we may be able to assist.

  • Perhaps a new report option called Please Refresh?

    • What do you mean?

      • Bump the deal back the front page please message to mod.

      • Thanks neil for explaining. I did rush to post that deal and didn't realise the other deal was active so that's my fault. What I think greenpossum is trying to say is that there should be an option to report the deal to be considered as repost on the front page.
An example of this is that microsoft put prices up online of windows 8 so maybe the deal might expire at any moment in retail stores so due to that reason there be an option to repost or update the deal again with an explanation as to why and then a mod would decide if it should be reposted in front page as a reminder.

        • You can certainly report the deal but it may be better to use the Talk with the Mod forum as then you can explain why.

So the general criteria for stickying is:

          • Time critical deals. 1 day deal. Expiring today etc.
          • Deals that have a start date or end date in the future. (e.g. A deal that starts in 2 weeks)
          • 50 votes +
          • Number of duplicates submitted (e.g. Nexus 4 deal the other day)
          • Request for sticky
          • Continually changing deals (e.g. Androids 7 days of freebies)

Generally, we put it up for mod discussion. We also tend to stay away from stickying more than 1 thing at a time and not stickying for more than a few hours. Things posted recently within the past couple of days would probably not qualify for a sticky.

So we'll discuss it and figure out the best course. Personally, I don't think it's sticky worthy but I do think its frontpage noteworthy as we can write a bit of a summary of the Win 8 upgrade issue. Probably also email newsletter worthy.

As for the duplicates, on the other end of the scale we had a huge amount of people complaining about the free Qantas FF membership. Last time that was posted was 3 years ago.

We also have a special condition for supermarket listings where individual listings can be posted in addition to weekly. Discussion here.

It's gets quite complicated at times.

        • people complaining about the free Qantas FF membership. Last time that was posted was 3 years ago.

The most recent one I can see was between Late June / Early July last year luckily past that pesky 6 month period ;) and there's several more I can see over the last year or two.

Wonder how many suckers have forked out $82.50 for something that's always free..

  • It would be cool if we could just have an unexpired frontpage deals section.

All deals that reach the frontpage but haven't expired yet will stay in that section.

    • You can do that by

      • going to Deals and then hit the settings button.
      • Go to Front Page section
      • Check Do not show expired deals.
      • Cool I didn't know that.

Might be worth having a button for it or something.

If many people visited that section it would make sure expired deals get reported. If only a few people used it I'm assuming there would be many expired deals that expired early.
