In need of a reliable GPS, $130 budget.

Really don't want to spend more than $130.

Anyone got any idea which GPS represents the best value for money at the moment?

I will be using it for pizza deliveries, so the maps need to be 100% around eastern suburbs syd

Wants:
Fast boot time (can't sit in my car for 20 seconds while it turns on, though shouldn't be an issue)
Auto on when ignition on/ power to 12v
Fast address finding
Accurate house locations, I don't want to park 50m down the street.
Strong GPS lock/signal
Traffic maybe? Or expecting too much?

Map updates for 2 years would be nice.

Thanks :)

  • Any of the latest Navman, Garmin or TomTom within that budget would be more than satisfactory. Or if you have Google maps on your phone, use that.

  • Get a Chinese GPS from eBay. Cheaper than $90. As reliable as any other. Can find free map updates twice a year.

  • +2

If you buy cheap, before parting with money, take it out into the sunlight, turn it on and check that you can actually see the damn thing. I have two cheap GPS here (ALDI (Navman?) and something sourced from overseas), and they are both useless in daylight.

I have a Garmin now that was about $200.00. Happy.

    Cheers

    • Used to be 100% behind TomTom, but since about 3 years ago, Garmin.

I think feature for feature they are the same EXCEPT, I switched when it became impossible to hack the TomTom, as their maps were still around the 135 Euro mark to update, whereas in that time Garmin started offering LifeTime updates with a lot of their units.

I've played with a few of the cheap Chinese units, and found them highly unreliable. You mileage might vary but there's a huge difference between companies that invest in their GPS and map technology, and a chinese workshop that simply produces a Windows CE (and now Android) device and overlays it with either pirated maps, are far lower quality maps that you get from someone dedicated.

You always get what you pay for.

Not a big fan of Navman myself, even though I had a dealership for a while, didn't like their interface, accuracy or build quality as much as the others personally.
