Interesting, but they ask for a lot of personal information:

Drivers License, and Australian Passport, or
    Foreign Passport, and Medicare Card.

They probably have to, to prevent money laundering.

My question is: are you really that paranoid?

Try only buying from legit places… Even the best bargains should be avoided like the plaque if the seller, and, especially, the payment gateway smell fishy.

$1 monthly service fee if <$500 is loaded on the card each month:

You'd be better off getting a free debit credit card and only load that account with required funds.

    • ahh my work proxy blocks this for reason "none" so i did not read the details. but yeah probably not so good because people that use prepaid cc dont really want to load tons on. =)

    • yup i was just looking for that info. prepaid CC's are stacked full of hidden fees.

more of a con job than a "deal"

      • You choose either $1 per month or $1 each time you load money.

    Lol.. No bargain Here

  • How does this compare to the 28 degrees card. This one is free to get atm. Dollar per month if you don't put min.$500 on it or dollar each time you recharge. 2.5% transaction fee for overseas billing?

    • one big difference is the limit of a preload vs the limit of a credit card, the idea is if your card is misused you may lose a lot more on an actual credit card. but then again, most companies protect their consumers from fraud.

and link to this famed 28 card (its a great card for overseas internet/physical transactions) http://www.28degreescard.com.au/

  • it's cool but I'm wondering how long it takes to deposit money onto the card (instantly or 2-3 days). For example if I want to buy something discounted heavily online which is only available for a few hours, I do not want to wait 2-3 days for the money to be deposited then use it?

  • PP cards are good for buying under multiple accounts where the business retains credit card details and won't let you buy using that card for multiple accounts. Like Living Social. I tried to buy some Pizza Mia vouchers on my daughters account using the same CC I used on my LS account. It accepted it and then came back and rejected it later.

Also good for those bogus deals where they keep billing you until you cancel.

  • i have a NON reloadable Woolies prepaid Mastercard…given as a gift
anyway everytime i logon to check the account they ask if i want to change to the reloadable
    at no charge…

  • there are lots of CCs out there without charges, not a bargain

      Link one - Reloadable.

      • Debit credit card then just load the account with the required funds?

        • That's not comparing Apples with Apples. Bank Account Required.

        • then use card like 28 Degree, there will be no bank account required, and you can setup your credit amount to as low as you can, when you want to use money, set a higher amount of credit easily rather than go to store to load your card with cash.

good things to know about reloadable cards.

        • Credit Rating Required for a Credit Card. Not the same thing again.

    • Or use a debit card.

  • How often do you have to renew the card (fee is $4.95)?

  • Hi Guys was searching for a prepaid CC option as its getting riskier day by day to use CC details on web now a days especially website who don't take Paypal.

how is using a prepaid card going to be any safer than a bank-issued card? your prepaid card will have a balance and unauthorised transactions can still appear on it.

personally i don't know why so many people prefer paypal over credit card. for australian businesses i prefer credit card. the period for charge backs is much longer.

my preferred method for "untrusted" sites is to use a dedicated visa debit card which usually has zero balance unless i am planning on making a purchase. no suprise authorisations thank you very much.

ing direct let you have up to 2 visa debit cards, so i use one for personal transactions at shops etc, and one dedicated to untrusted online transactions.

    • It's only dangerous for morons. I've shopped online for years, probably since 2004, never once have had my card details compromised. However, in that time I've had my car broken in to 5 times, house robbed twice, and a stolen bike for good measure. Stealing your CC details, even by the most obvious scam, takes a level of sophistication, and you're far more likely to encounter more pedestrian types of crime than having someone fleece your credit card number by cracking 128bit encryption. But you don't hear people say 'its becoming more and more dangerous to take your car outside'.

  • To add something for this deal. So load this card with the ING card to get 5% back for paywave. Then use this card for anywhere cannot do paywave.

    • It's been discussed. You can't load from a credit account.

  • Took me a while but still can't figure out what kind of innovative product is this???
Most of the banks now offer Visa debit card for free which serve the same purpose.

This is not a deal. This is not even a sustainable product in my opinion

  • feels like an ad. Most posts relating prepaid cards appear to always start with that line.

  • As others have said - other cards have no fees too. Not a bargain.

  • Better to keep with debit card and stay away from such pre-loaded credit cards..

  • I think this IS a good deal, since its a $10 saving.

There ARE situations when a pre-loaded card like is a good fit for purpose, such as giving a fixed amount to a kid to spend via google play store. Can you even get a Visa debit card as a kid ? I hope not.

But happy for someone to link to a better alternative.

  • www.familyfirst.com.au for 12-18 year olds. Except for the membership fee of $2 on opening the account, after that the Visa Debit card is fee free (as is the account) as long as the owner chooses Credit over Debit at the eftpos machine. The only downside to this is the requirement to front at a branch to open an account. The kids and I did this as a holiday jaunt in the break but I imagine could be very difficult at other times…

http://www.suncorpbank.com.au/personal-bank-accounts/everyda… operate a fee free debit visa too

The option is http://www.nab.com.au/wps/wcm/connect/nab/nab/home/personal_… for more fee free debit visa cards

    • Thanks for the links.

familyfirst …trying to overlook that they sound like a political party…but no branches in Vic, so not possible for me. Plus, application form (http://assets.familyfirst.com.au/files/forms/All%20Access%20…) is very ugly and appears to require you to already have an account.

Suncorp - requires age >= 16, so no go

Nab - "You must be 18 years or over to apply online", again, no go for my 14y.o.

      [edit]
I think snappy1234 has the best option, the non-reloadable card
      https://www.woolworthsmoney.com.au/wowm/wps/wcm/connect/WowM…
no painful identity checks, passports or drivers license required, once-off $4 fee, just make sure you spend before it expires.
