Sharp Aquos 60" Opinions?

Hi all
im in the market for a TV in the 55-60" range. I went into JB today and the gentleman recommended the Sharp Aquos LC60LE631X, which just so happened to be in a box waiting to be assembled to put on display. He said if you want to see if i'd have to help him. I happily obliged. 30 mins later and i get a my first look at the unit. Nothing special but nicer than the sony sitting next to it. I could help but think that he only recommended it so i'd help him though. However shortly after he tells me that if it was up to him he would go the model before the Sharp Aquos LC60LE630X, the only difference according to him is difference in 1 number in the model number. Reviews of the earlier model say that there is some light leak in dark rooms given the way the LED is designed to light up the LCD.

The 631 he can do for $1750
The 630 he can do for $1350 but it needs to be ordered in.

Considering this is the ozbargain forum naturally i would choose the cheaper option and wait for it to arrive.

However before i do i figured i might as well ask to see if any one out there can recommend an LCD LED, side lit, back lit, whatever… around the $1500 between 55-60". Im only interested in reputed brands with decent warranties, no kogan etc….

Alternatively is it worth forking out for a full array LED TV, or will the OLED's seen at CES quickly depreciate that market

Cheers in advance

  • If Edge lit LCD is your game, nothing beats the Sony HX850 with black reproduction. However the Sharp is 5" bigger. Really depends on whether you want quality or size.

    • I had a look at the HX850, only positive things have been said. However it's a 3D TV, i never have and never will use 3D so i don't want to spend an extra $500 to get it. Know any other of the HX850 standard without 3d?

  • i'm not really too fussed, is edge lit really that much of a deal breaker?

    • Edge lit only makes the panel smaller, doesn't make the image quality any better.

In fact edge lit makes regional back lighting (mostly) useless, but this feature has fallen out of favour these days anyway.

      • sorry Bruce i have really limited knowledge of the whole LED lighting system, the issue with edge lighting from what i've read is that it has the tendency to leak in dark rooms.

        • Some TVs might, but this isn't an inherent flaw of the system (as far as I know). Backlit screens can have the same problem.

        • so is it a case of 'put up with it' or spend the extra dosh on a more expensive tv
