  • Do you mean braces.
It would be a good idea to get a few quotes. Prices can vary amongst different orthodontists. It would also depend if braces for upper or lower or both jaws you need. With orthodontic treatment HCF would pay you a certain percentage back which is subject to a lifetime limit. You can negotiate a payment plan. You could save some money by having most of your out of pocket expense in a financial yearand claim tax rebate on medical expenses. I think it is 20% refund for all expenses after $2500. Also the insurer would pay only within an annual limit. Insurance works on calender year.
Hope this is on too confusing.
One issue I was having with HCF was they needed separate item number for each visit and each treatment. You will find most orthodontics would bill you under a higher item number which is generic for all orthodontic treatment. If that happens you would find that you would get very little back. May be speak to HCF and see what they want you to do. You may be better off asking the clinic if they have dealt with a HCF claim process.
Please note my research is from couple of years back. Because of anticipated issues with HCFs' claims I stayed on with BUPA.

  • Also watch out. I found out by accident that one gets more back from an orthodontist than a dentist when one is getting braces. Sure the orthodontist charges more, but with the extra rebate there wasn't a difference in price. The main difference is that one is a specialist and the other has just done a short course. So yes I agree go for a second or third opinion to make sure that the treatment is correct. Another tip is to ask them to check the wisdom teeth on the x-ray as they'll be there. No good getting the teeth all straight to find in years later that the wisdom teeth are coming through and moving them all again. Good luck, it's expensive!
