Coffee Storage Recommendations?

Hi Guys,

What do you store your coffee beans in?
After purchasing 2KG's worth from Manna beans, i'm looking for one of those air-tight containers that let you release the air before sealing.

Also, is there much in a coffee grinder? Is it woth paying the $100+ for a good one or will a $60 do?

Cheers

  • I use one of these and it does a great job:

(only fits 450g of beans though)

The general advice with grinders is buy the very best you can (within your budget…). If you're buying decent beans and have a good machine, I think it is well worth the investment. A good grinder will last you a very long time (probably outlive the machine).

I started with the popular Sunbeam 0480 cafe series grinder (possible to nab one for $99 these days), but I've upgraded to a better stepless grinder (Ascaso I-1).

I've heard great things about the Breville Smart Grinder BCG-800, around $199 from Good guys I think?

If I could upgrade again (which won't be anytime soon!) I'd either go a Rancilio Rocky for around $250 on ebay or a Compak k3 touch - approx $450 new

  • I just use metal tin that came with Vittoria coffee. Keeps my fresh roast beans good for a while.

And the best grinder is the Sunbeam 0480. It is about $100 on gumtree, or $150 brand new on sale in stores.

  • Have a read on http://coffeesnobs.com.au/
Beans are best kept in a container at room temp with a one way valve to let out the CO2 generated by the beans.
Buy the best grinder you can afford -you can pick a conical burr grinder for $100ish. Some of the grinders are made better by modding to make a grind sufficiently fine for espresso. Sunbeam 0480 or Breville bcg450 would be a good place to start.

  • Thanks for the help guys.

The coffee containers are hard to come by.

I will save the pennies for a decent grinder then.

At the moment i'm in love with our stove-top expresso maker. We have it making coffee to a level i consider equal and better then cafe style.
