Is it possible to use Seagate Expansion Drive as a Back Up Drive?

I asked hubby to pick up a seagate Backup Plus Drive at Dick Smiths and he was told that the Expansion Drive would do. He tried copying files across to it, but it's time consuming, and I really need to backup the installed software in case of a crash, as the computer has been playing up. Since it has been opened and tried, I can't take it back and exchange it, so I am wondering if there is any software which can be loaded onto the Expansion Drive to make backup easier.

Sorry if I come across as a computer newbie. It's because I am!

  • I use the laplink diskimage. I got it free lsst christmas via ozbargain.
There are other good softwares like acronis.
These kind of softwares will make an image copy of your computer so you can restore it in the future.
    Hope this helps.

If you are using Windows 7 or 8.
There is a great backup function pre-installed.

For Mac, there should be a similar tool.

Older versions of windows require a backup tool such as the ones artxty has mentioned.

Make sure you "image" rather than "clone" if you have something on the expansion drive already that you don't want to be overwritten.

In Win 7 go to Control Panel > System and Security > Backup and Restore.
You can "Create a system image" every so often to backup the whole drive (say, once every 6 months), and run regular file backups (daily or weekly). File backups exclude software but are incremental and will only backup changes since the last file backup.

      • Thanks for all your input. I have checked and I have Windows XP Home Edition 2002, but I don't have any of the CDs. I had a look online and it talks about installing the Backup CD, but that is not possible. So, it looks like I will need some downloadable software.
