Everyday price at Bunnings too. Not a bargain.

    • +8

didn't know Bunnings did key cutting. good to know. (i usually go to Mister Minit and it's more than $2.50)

      • +1

Last time I went to Mister Mint it was around 7.50-8.50.

        • +1

Bunnings Bendigo only charges $1.80 for a key cut, our mister minit charges $8!

      • +6

Well I've just found out I've been being ripped off at $10 a key…good ole Ozbargain explaining prices of obscure things to me.

    • +41

the key to a good deal is a price cut

    • +4

That's a good price, hopefully they lock it in

    • +5

Has there been a price drop? My local Bunnings charges $4.25!

      • +1

Yep same price here in NSW

    • Unlocking a bargain will in-turn bring you savings.

    • Good on you delfredo for being helpful, and critical without negging.

  • +5

Maybe you could use their 10% pricebeat policy to get it down to $2.25?

    • +1

Not if the price is the same! It has to be cheaper than theirs. Hence, the 'Pricebeat Guarantee'!
"If you happen to find a lower price on a stocked item we'll beat it by 10%"

      • +4

Even then, would it be considered a stocked item or a service?

        • Good call!

        • Even then, would it be considered a stocked item or a service?

It's a key, cut to match your own. Was that a trick question?

  • How can other places charged $7 per cut?

    • +20

Because they don't sell other products at inflated prices to offset the $2.50 key cutting service.

      • +1

I think your joke is funny, but chances are when places charge more for key cutting they charge too much for other things too.

My shopping centre pop up stores charge 10 bucks for keys. I asked about a watch battery replacement too, they all vary from $15-$25 bucks.

I got my parents to ask their friend, who charged the cost of the battery which is $2 and it was all done.

        • +6

I can understand why local key cutters, especially those who occupy a small area in a shopping mall, charge so much. They (small business individuals) need to make a living out of this business and spend almost half their life in the mall. To be true to ourselves, how often do we get keys cut and replace watch batteries? It's a different story at Bunnings and Masters where they sell in volumes and the key cutting service is there to provide a more complete and fuller hardware shopping experience for their customers, ie. a one-stop shop.

        • Mighty10 charges over $4 for a single-sided key :(

  • +1

Pretty cool machine they have to do the key cutting too. Unfortunately they can't do all key types, but for standard house keys its good value.

  • +3

Shame their stupid photo-based key matching tool can't find a match to any of my house keys.

  • Hmmm good to know… I once had to go to Myer in a pinch and got ripped a big one lol

    • +1

      Myer cuts keys?

      • +15

they cut wallets and credit cards too

        • LOL

      • Myer cuts cheese!

  • +6

The keys are probably the light weight ones which come in a wide variety of colours. From experience these keys have a tendency to snap in the lock.

    • Agreed, they feel like some sort of very light alloy.
Bought a couple once… Never again!

  • Do Masters or Bunnings do replacement normal car keys (not the remote control type)?

    • +1

they only cut keys provided they do not have any transponder, or high security type.

ie. old school car keys and house keys only.

    • i had a friend who broke his car key in his car, costed 300 bucks for replacement. :(

      • what i found funny at masters was, the machine they had actually had the profiles for car keys. so in theory, they could cut it for you, even if you supplied the blank. however for some wierd reason (they cite security) they cannot cut it, and only dealers can.

        • when I lost a key for my mazda the dealer would only sell me a Blank I then had to take it away and get it cut and then take it back to the dealer to get it coded for my car. They told me it was too expensive to make a mistake .

        • from my experience, only the larger key cut business will touch a transponder key, and they only cut using the code (ie. not a duplicate). they charge a hell lot for it too. $25 for a single key, and that was apparently trade price.

mr minit will cut, but take no responsibility if they screw the key up.

        • In canberra I needed a spare key cut with a transponder, one place quoted $150! Ended up finding another place to do it for $100…

        • just to cut the key? and i thought $25 was expensive to cut a new key, when you consider that i had to program the key myself, and it is just a glorified key cut service.

        • May I ask how did you do that?

When we lost a transponder key it cost us $200 for a replacement.

        • +1

Get it replace at Mr Minit at about $100 or so…. money back if it doesnt work, and get the pamphlet from them first, sometimes there is a 10% discount.

        • +1

get a service manual for your car. sometimes it will have a section on how to program your own key.

certain makes make it easy to program, the easiest being toyota/lexus.

        • Will have to have a look at that - thanks.

        • Mazda ones are easy too, I know last year's mazda 2 and 3 used Ford Transponder tech, so you can easily get the instructions off the web.

You need 2 preprogrammed (e.g. original keys) to get the car to learn a new one.

  • +1

    this is a bit ambiguous…
is $2.50 the service charge or does that include the cost of the replacement blank, too?

    • Includes the cost of the blank too.

  • +1

Isn't this just their normal price? I thought it had to be some kind of sale to make it here

    • +3

It maybe their normal price, but I consider it a bargain,as would many.
If this wasn't posted I wouldn't know that keycutting could be obtained so cheaply. If it had to go on sale to make it here, it still may not be a bargain, ie Mr Minit charges $7, he has a 50% off sale, then is it considered a bargain.

    • +2

Cardz… If your local servo started selling premium unleaded EVERY day for 50c/lt then what would that be?? Because they were doing it at that price every day it would not be worth mentioning if you work by your theory????????

Check around at the cost of key cutting… the price reported here IS a bargain. The fact that it is every damn day is a bonus!

It sure beats people who madly report non bargains that are a one off clearance special that are not available anywhere else.

Common sense… If it is notably cheaper than the regular price it is sold for elsewhere = bargain.

    • Thats what I thought too, Cardz. Other deals have been bagged for the normal price.

  • I got some household keys cut at Bunnings last year for $1 each. It was a limited time special deal. Maybe they will bring it back now that they are competing with Masters ???

  • Sucks living in Adelaide, no Masters stores so no Bunnings price match - I just rang the Modbury store and they want a rediculous $4.25!!!

  • +2

something to be aware of, unless they use the automatic machines, if the person does an average job of it (and i've found it happens from time to time) then it possibly wont work. It sounds simple, but using the cutting machines uses a bit of skill. If they don't have it, you'll have a crap key.

    • +1

Which is why smart people avoid getting keys at the cheapest places! Never again for me.

    • When I bought a house, the only key provided for the garage was cracked so the shaft was only just attached to the part you hold onto so the key was not even straight. I took it to Bunnings who cut it to the best of their ability, then I went home and found it was not correct and the lock didn't open.

I went back to Bunnings and we discussed the sticking points and they tweaked the cuts on the key manually, not as a copy, and it corrected the issue so the lock was functional. Excellent service, but I think I was fortunate with the employee understanding their job, not a new employee unfamiliar with keys and locks.

  • Has anyone been to a bunnings in Victoria recently and had a standard C4 key cut. If so, what was the price?

    • +1

$2.50 at Bunnings Hawthorn - every day price.

  • Good idea to ring ahead as I usually get "the machine isn't working" at Bunnings.

  • +4

For WA folk - Colli Timber and Hardware do it for $1 EVERY DAY.

It's a sad looking place (Malaga) with hardly any customers, but always good for mass key cutting. I did 30 prior to renting out my house. The poor bugger spent forever cutting my keys. Only one dud. I don't know how this business survives as I haven't seen too many retail customers there ever.

    • It may look cool, but pulling those things apart isnt fun, I used to re-key at a hardware store… For those people with different front and back door keys, and window keys… I make them all the same :)

      • How much does a re-key cost usually? For some reason my door lock is slightly misaligned and I need to pull out the key a millimetre after inserting the key fully in, before I can turn it.

Can this be done at Bunnings?

  • The price is cheaper yes, but it us only worth getting as a spare emergency key as the quality is of the metal and cut is extemely cheap in my experience. It was actually difficult to open the door as compared with a key I got cut for $8 at a small city store.
You would be suprised but it made a difference for me…
