Grundig 1TB Freeview PVR for $239 on Catch of The Day. Great Price

10

Great price for a 1 Terabyte PVR. These are great as they use the Freeview EPG for recording. You never have to worry about times and adding extra time at the end for shows that finish late. It uses the broadcast codes, so even if the show starts late, this won't start recording until the show starts and will keep recording even if it goes over time on the TV guide.

Freeview EPG also allows you to record an entire series of a show even if you don't know when it is screened or the TV station moves to a new time slot.. quite a smart system.

    Freeview? No thanks.

I can do all that with a Topfield and still be able to copy files to and from it.

    • Topfield does not use 'crid codes' from broadcasters to start and stop recording of TV programs. Only Freeview recorders can do this and BUSH and GRUNDIG are the only ones that have developed Freeview recording. Samsung is using Freeview on their new TVs, but not for recording.

Topfields can update their EPG as the broadcasters do. All broadcasters give at least 24 hours of accurate EPG information, bu the topfield can adjust last minute if need be. Makes Freeview pointless. CRID codes are no more accurate. (actually Topfields process the CRID data, so if you want to write a TAP for it, go right ahead)

I'd rather be able to skip ads and transfer files/recordings off the thing, which Freeview units won't let you do.

Also, Grundig and Bush are probably the worst two quality brands on the Australian market.

I agree. The ability to skip ads outweighs any so-called advantages of Freeview pvrs.

the freeview logo mainly means the recorder WONT do things, rather than will.
it cannot allow you to copy files off, to remote stream or to skip commercials among other things
no thanks - i love commercial skipping

  • Grundig - umm, not for me (based on past experience).

grundig + COTD = definitely not

Gee if it can't FF/skip ads thats an instant deal breaker …..and should be so for nearly everyone. What a horrible deliberate attempt to force you to watch these. I'm shocked.

Grundig is just a name these days after it went bust several yrs ago and was bought up by someone else, so don't expect the same quality they were always reknowned for.

freeview=limited FF/REW speeds+no AD skip+no usb file transfer! never had a freeview unit, never will, and i've had quite a few pvrs

  • It's not that they don't let you skip ads, it's just that they're skips are inconveniently large when you want to skip ads. The Kogan Freeview PVR uses 30 second skips, so while far from perfect, it's incorrect to say that Freeview PVRs don't allow ad skipping.

  • Freeview = Crippleware, not a bargain.
