Mini PC Recommendations for Torrenting and 4K Streaming on Kodi

Hi all, I’m looking to buy a mini-PC for the following use case and would appreciate recommendations:

Primary Use
  • Runs 24/7, 365 days.
  • VPN always on for seeding/torrents.
  • Streams 4K movies over SMB to a TV running Kodi (TV is in another room, connected via WiFi to the router). I know I can get the mini PC to my TV room, but wife will not allow it for 'aesthetic purposes'.

Looking for specific model recommendations or any advice.

I am new to this, so please excuse anything above that doesn't make sense; but I am happy to clarify!

Thanks in advance!

I'd recommend a base Mac Mini M4. It's very low powered, small footprint, and quiet, almost silent, but it's also powerful enough that you could use it for work in the future.

Not to mention much better resale value if you want to offload it.

    • Too expensive…..

Several options on recycled hardware, try in Northern suburbs i have a place where they sell top notch hardware for less and negotiable. PM me if you need the address.

  • If you're using kodi you could just use fen light with real debrid. you can stream bluray remuxes with it no problem.

    • some other addons to check out is umbrella and pov

If you're going to be running torrents, you're going to need space. I'd run a pc with a NVMe drive 512gb or more to run Proxmox with Truenas, then you can use the sata ports to run storage drives for everything. Truenas can run Jellyfin, Plex torrents and heaps more, or you could load a Windows VM on proxmox run the VPN app with torrents and an iSCSI directory. The skies the limit, really.

I'd just buy some refurb ex corp thing, like this https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/204809615819 or similar. you don't need a new expensive PC for what you want. Search Ebay, there's heaps of them.

  • Use a NAS, that is what they are designed to do. I use a Synology 920+ and it completes the tasks you mentioned very easily.
