TV Wall Mounts - Anything I Need to Know?

Thought it's about time I mounted my tv…

But I'm a bit confused with the wall mount options.

I know my vesa screw mounting size: 4x400
And the weight of the tv is 12kg

Is there anything else I need to know?

I don't really understand how there can be a tv mount for $35 and then Samsung are selling their tv mount for $250
Both are full motion mounts, so what gives?

This is the $35 mount for reference:

Is there anything else I need to know?

If you're diy-ing this and not familiar, ensure mount to stud lol

    • Yeah I'm fine with the install, the thing that's confusing me is why there's such huge price discrepancy between mounts? Surely there isn't that much variation or difference?

To a certain extent maybe the structural integrity of the unit but I’d say the Samsung one is a rip.

FWIW I had a $40 mount (left right tiltable) from eBay holding up my 65 inch tv and it’s still fine 7 years later

      • It's been a decade since I last needed a new one, but it's always been like this. Back in the day Jaycar would sell you something cheap or you buy something expensive from JB/HN/GG etc etc. I've got Jaycar ones that have been there for at least 15 years that are still just fine.
Call it a high margin add on to make up for the low margin TV.

If anything it's better/easier/cheaper today since TV's got much lighter than they used to be. Hell at 12kg you barely need a stud, but please absolutely bolt to a stud…

But for a solid wall drill straight into the concrete or brickwork at the desired height.using a masonry bit.

I suggest OP reads up on various wall mounts, download the instructions and studies them and checks the reviews.

Maybe watch a few YouTube videos as well

      Best way to learn.

Do you need a pivot mount? If not, get a normal TV Mount.

I've got a Pivot Wall Mount for my TV in the corner of the room and it is fine (fixed into the stud of course). Otherwise, all my other TVs are just a flat wall mount and Bunnings mounts do the job fine. Been fine for the last 5 years.

Get a SANUS mount from Bunnings or Costco. There comes in fixed, Full motion, Swivels, Tilt, etc. Choice is yours.
Fixed mounts sit closer to the wall. Ensure that you use the appropriate screws for the struts.
Packages usually say the weight they can handle and the size.

Ensure that you mount it based on the sitting position, measure it 10 times, and drill it once.

    • Got the SANUS mount and installed it tonight.

      Thanks for the recommendation.

It's a quality mount. Hour and half later and I'm all set watching.

      Turned out perfect.

    • Cheers, I bought a SANUS full motion this morning, easy to install and great how you can move it around.

    • costco is like 30% cheaper wtf

  • VESA mounts are universal, I bet you can get it cheaper than $35.

If you don't have power points on the wall at the height of the wall mount, think about sending them through the wall cavity to the bottom. If you are going to do that, ensure that the connectors get past the noggs uninterrupted, otherwise try and cut the hole beneath the noggs.

    • Bunnings has a semi circle white duct with sticky back that actually doesn’t look too horrible if that’s too much trouble

      • Link?

        • sure

I used this one to hide 2 set of LV cables for my custom track light system - but there are bigger ones available but the bigger ones might not have adhesive backing.

Why does anything have a price discrepancy. If TV mount prices confuse you, better not look at the prices of HDMI cables.

Sometimes brands just choose to price themselves higher because people perceive high price means high quality.

Samsung have brand name. They rely on a captive audience on checkout of their online store that pops up and asks "Would you like to buy this genuine Samsung mount for only $250." In that moment Samsung is hoping no one knows what a wall mount should cost and it's implied that this is the special Samsung endorsed mount that will definitely work with your TV and if you're spending $3k already, what's another 250 while you're there may as well saves you shopping around expending more brain power.

PS. To answer your question, the actual price drivers I could determine from my recent shopping are
    - Quality of included instructions
    - Whether the tilt is fixed angles or infinitely variable
    - How low profile the mount is
    - The weight capacity

Why does anything have a price discrepancy.

Are you suggesting prices need to be regulated?

  • Is there anything else I need to know?

Weight of TV < Weight the mount will support.

Depends on the weight of the pie

And where the studs are and get a mount long enough to cover at least one stud (two even better) and use toggle bolts for the rest.

Plenty of people won't think harder than "I have a Samsung TV, so I'll get a Samsung mount."
I'd charge $250 too, in that circumstance!

  • I just went to get my 2019 Samsung Frame mounted to the wall before learning that the Samsung One Connect cable that they supply is not up to standards to be put inside a wall - meaning I have to buy a separate 'in wall' cable that has some certification that allows it to be put into the wall.

    I cannot find this cable.
Even if I could get it from somewhere in the US, its a $300 cable.

    • ah there you go, i just learnt something new.

    • I call BS on that, but if you are worried then you could run your current Samsung One cable through fixed or flexible conduit to make yourself compliant.

      • If its not in the wall yes otherwise apparently thats not an option if it is in the wall

  • Majority of the weight will be on the top screw for that bracket extended out. Don't muck it up.

  • Cheaper mount will be thinner and flimsier which is not a good thing. I got a Selby and it’s heavy and sturdy, but I think there are cheaper brackets that will do ok too.

  • That mount is only wide enough for a single stud. I'd be looking at a mount that can span 2 studs, especially where the TV can swivel and/or extend.

Selby have a great range of sturdy mounts.

Hey @Odin, I installed a tube in the wall to hide all the cables too, it was remarkably easy if you are interested.
