  • just wonder how do this compare to Pioneer 7.1 AV?

    • +3

This is where it gets annoying. They sound different to eachother, as in, not worse, but personal preference.

To compare them I went to a HN where they were all rigged up, and compared them with the same music through the same speakers. After making my choice I left and bought elsewhere.

decent price, but still not as good as the previous deal from JBhifi for the 673 model @ $430.

    • +1

for sure! I'm hanging out for another of those specials. I can wait… ;)

      • any idea of how often we will see deals like that?

        • Once a year maybe? I'm still devastated too ='[

        • +1

it wasnt actually a 673, its a HTR6065. altho they are speced the same the HTR6065 is meant to come with a speaker pack. my guess is that somehow the speakers were sold off elsewhere so the amp on its own was flogged off cheap. im really not sure you will ever see the HTR6065 for even close to $400 again.

i found all this out because just after the HTR6065 sale finished i found i needed to replace my old amp… typical…. ended up getting a 673 for about $600 deal that was on here around the same time caus i figured i wouldnt see a 673 ($1100 "normal" price) much cheaper any time soon.

if your prepared to wait and see if it ever comes out at that again by all means wait. maybe when the 673's replacement comes out they will flog off the old stock cheap, who knows.

  • Hmmm I was thinking to buy Denon 1713 for around $ 450-ish from Hardly Normal. I wonder what's the sound quality between this Yamaha and Denon 1713. One thing to consider is the Denon is 5.1 channel while Yamaha is 7.1 channel and most people don't really need 7.1 so why should we pay for things that we don't need?

    • +2

Future proof. You might not need 7.1 now but imagine in a few years time you may want to go 7.1.

7.1 should theoretically give you more RMS power in stereo mode.

    • I have a 2073, which is 9.2! I only use it for 5.1 setup, I couldn't do a 7.2, let alone 9.2 if I wanted to. That's without pointing out the distinct lack of source material for 7.2/9.2.

That said the reason I bought that particular model was for increased power input, multi-zone capability and increased inputs.

Edit: I understand the future-proofing part, which is great, but for proper 7.1 setup you need a minimum 2 metres space behind your couch, no chance for that for quite a while!

    • I got the denon 2113 (7.1) to run my 5.1 setup with the fronts bi-amped using the 2 unused channels. Or you can use the extra channels as zone 2 etc. Not sure if this yamaha supports those functions but that is one reason to go 7.1 even if you just run 5.1

    • +2

I've got a yamaha aventage running 5.1 bi-amped. With spare channels, you can run separate 2.0 channels that can play different sources at the same time ie. 5.1 in the living room + 2.0 in the kitchen + 2.0 outside. The spare channels however cant use digital inputs, and quality isnt as tip top as the main 5.1 channels

      • What does bi-amping do? Does it let you drive the speakers harder?

        • +1

Yep, the front channels use 4 discrete amps (channels) instead of 2. Allows the amp to separate the high and low frequencies between the two channels per speaker.

Yous get better bass response usually and better overall imaging from the speakers. Since the low frequencies arent starving the high freqs of power.

edit: Just to claify, bi-amping a 100w channel doesnt give you 200w output. It just means you get 100w for high frequency and 100w from lower frequencies.

    • Denon 1713 for $450'ish at Hardly Normal - could you please link to this.

  • You think…

  • So.. it has air play that works with iDevices with out cable what about bluetooth or something that I can connect my nokia 920 with? or do i need to use USB every time?

    • No bluetooth support, but if you can get a DLNA streaming app ("Play To", in Microsoft parlance), the amp would support that too, similarly to AirPlay. Nokia are apparently releasing one for WP8 this quarter.

    • Not sure if the Yammaha app is available on the N920. If yes, then you don't really need airplay as the music player in the app is very good. you can either play local music from the phone or from a DLNA server. Not sure about this amp, but on the 673 and the Yam app I can stream the same source to main and zone two.

    • Newer iDevices allow Airplay wirelessly. I have this amp and Airplay doesn't work with my router (it can't forward multicast from wireless to wired). Decent routers should but worth checking if an important features. Apple routers a fine of course.

  • I have to check my manual but I think 7.2 allows you to do multi-zone as well? Or there might be separate speaker outputs for multi-zone.

  • +1

is zone b a zecond zone? can it play a different source, or only the same source?

    edit… same source only
