  • seeing dan murphys sells the same in 700ml for $189.99, $199.99 for 1lt is a great price, nice find op but buyer beware, 1lt blue label will not be available at all stores

  • For those who like JWBlue, I have seen the 700ml at Dan Murphy's on promotion for $165.00 several times in 2012. Having said that this price looks very good too.

Even at $165 for 700mL that's the equivalent of $235.71 per litre.

This may be a good price for this whisky, so I'm not contesting that it is a good "bargain. But as I say every time.. this is the most overrated whisky in the world. for around $150 for a 700ml there are so many far more interesting single malts that could be had.

This matches exactly with $140 for 700mL.

      But your point stands.

I couldn't agree more, plenty of 12yo single malts around the $100 mark leave Blue label for dead as far as taste and smoothness goes.

        Examples please.

Assuming you like a peaty scotch the Lagavulin 16yo is $90 at Dan Murphy's.

Don't get me wrong it is smooth.. but if the best complement someone can give a whisky is that it's smooth then IMHO they don't understand whisky. Distilleries work very hard to bring out interesting flavours in their malts.. All I get from Blue Label is lightly toasted white bread.

But if smoothness is the benchmark, you can save yourself some money and buy a Dalwhinnie 15yo for $70. Or the Old Pulteney 12yo (goes well in warm weather, and has some pleasant coconut, vanilla, pandan notes) for $80. The 12yo Glen ELgin is another one that comes to mind (around $100).

If you want something a bit more fruity pick up the Duthies Mortlach 18yo - nice sherried malt for $125

If you like something a bit peaty, you can still pick up a Laphroaig 15yo for around $120..

          My current favorites are:
          - Yamazaki 12yo Japanese Whisky ($89.99 for 700ml @ Dan Murphy's)
          - Glenmorangie Quinta Ruban 12yo Highland ($79.99 for 700ml @ Dan Murphy's)

even the original Glenmorangie 12yo is quite nice.

Sorry I accidentally negged you mate… Bloody iPhone! Good choices esp the yamazaki.. Ive been getting into the japanese malts myself lately.

  • 700ml is enough for me- 1 litre usually gives me a hangover.

Good single malt whiskey should never give you a hangover.

I've heard that before but it makes no scientific sense to me- your liver and your brain don't care how fancy your alcohol is, only that it's alcohol.

        • probably more to do with people appreciating a single malt and only having a couple rather then drinking it for the sake of getting drunk.

Blue Label is great for a walker, but is absurdly over priced for what it is and I can't think of any person who enjoy a quality scotch who wouldn't rather pick up 2 or 3 different single malts for the same price. Glenfiddich 12, lagavulin 16 and a glen livet 12 can be had for $200 and provide a far better scotch experience.

That being said each to their own I guess.

This posting/thread made me go buy some Lagavulin 16yo, which I like, and some Highland Park 12yo (which I've heard is good value at $60 but never tried).

So if nothing else - thanks for that Kimba.
