What phone would you buy with $330?

My son dropped my phone in December and I sent it to my insurance company to fix, typically there excess has increased to $250 (used to be $100) so they have offered to replace the phone it was a Htc one X (white) and I need to pay the excess to them first, or I can have a pay out of around $330 so my question is which phone would you buy?

LG Optimus 4X HD from Kogan.

    • It is a nice phone but horrible LG software as usual (had the same problem with my 2X P990), unless they've changed it considerably in recent updates. If you get this phone and don't like the software, there's plenty of after-market roms and stuff that vastly improve it :)

There's 2 aftermarket ROMs on xda and neither have full functionality (ie no mobile data for one, and no mobile reception whatsoever for the other)

        • Damn, it must not have been nearly as popular as I thought it was. Oh well.

OP you could consider a second hand (or refurbished) older model phone, like a galaxy s2 or something.

        • I believe there were some major issues getting the bootloader unlocked. Devs often don't like to support models who make it difficult to do their thing.

  • Kogan have the One X back in stock for $419

Otherwise, a Galaxy Nexus can be had about that price. Probably the best handset if you're interested in Custom ROMs.
Or the aforementioned LG 4X HD (also from Kogan) if you're not (it has a locked bootloader, so will never get any Custom ROM action).
    Similarly the RAZR V

EDIT: If it's just a smashed screen on the One X, you could potentially have it repaired for ~$100. Pretty sure I saw an ad on Gumtree advertising One X screen replacement for $80

    • People are definately running custom ROMs on the 4X, but I'm not sure what is involved and wouldn't go so far as to recommend it for this purpose.

I bought a screen with plastic suround for my defy for $20 on ebay, 15 mins to install.

      Edit: 4X Root:

        Incorrect

        4X Root:

Root is not unlocking the bootloader.

You MUST unlock the bootloader to install a custom ROM.
The 4X bootloader is still locked and therefore there are no custom ROMs
As evidenced by the complete lack of ROMs one level up from the link you supplied.

        • Did you read the link? It also has custom recovery. Also a locked boot loader only prevents you replacing the bootloader, which can just make it easier to prevent bricking the device - all motorola phones were like this for some time.

Note that this does not mean that this has been done yet (or will be).

        • I'll very happily stand partially corrected when the 2 ROMs (both of which appear to be just a hack of the 4X ROM dump and therefore arguably not "custom" in the generally accepted definition) that currently exist on xda are actually functional.

  • Great I wish I had checked Gumtree, I took it to three repairers whilst I was on holidays I was told $250+ by all of them. So put it into insurance as I said I used to have a $100 excess on personal items, they informed me the excess had gone up to $250 so there was no difference in getting the insurance to cover it…. but they have now lost it, so have to replace it… pay out $330 or new phone and I pay the $250 excess.. should ask for it back wonder what they would do then?

    • Tell them you will take the cash but you need the phone returned to ensure noone can access your personal data.

Looking again, it looks like it's actually $180. apparently my memory forgot the 1 at the start..
Personally, I reckon that's still worth it.
You pocket the $50 leftover and you end up with a much nicer phone than you'd get for $330

  • Interesting where do I go to find out what my rights are, as they have lost my phone, so what would they if I ask for it back?
