Well that's the end of the Crazy John's brand

I never quite understood what value they added.

  • Do note that Crazy John's were not a subsidiary set up by Vodafone. They were reselling Telstra network, and moved over to resell Vodafone network in 2007 and then the company was sold to Vodafone in 2008 for estimated $150 million.

  • Yeah, there's more commentary here. In 2008 "Crazy John"'s widow sold the business to Vodafone after he died in 2007. He was a character, it seems.

Crazy John engineered the $0 phone on a contract selling technique which swept across all carriers. I guess once he passed away and the business sold that was that.

  • I'm currently with Crazy Johns prepaid as my mobile provider, what will happen to my phone connection when they shutdown?

    • Since Vodafone is the carrier, presumably they will contact you to ask if you want to move to their plans when your credit runs low.

    • I read somewhere that it will remain active and you won't lose service, and the pricing/etc will remain the same, just branded as vodafone network. I guess if it stops working one day, you'll have to call them or something.

    • They don't have shutdown anything since it's serviced by the same network, just different branding. I think what they will do is stop selling CJ plans so no more new customers on CJ plans. Question is what they do with grandfathered customers, whether they will continue to give you the CJ rates or harmonise to the VF rates.

      • Well. They moved all the 3 and old Orange users to Vodafone after a few years (although they are on different network).

        • I thought three users who still have/had a plan grandfathered can still pay the same rate they would have on three? Not 100% sure though as I don't know anyone who is still on three.

  • The business model broke once CJ moved from Telstra to Vodafone. The attraction was that customers were able to get Telstra reception at cheaper prices.

  • So coming towards the 20th, 40 of these stores that will close down would they reduce their stocks to get rid of them like Telechoice on St Kilda rd did while back?

  • yep i was told from 26th jan to check in store for cheap prepaid mobiles. any deals? online they are offering $50 credit for discounted mobiles prepaid atm. what can you use the $50 credit for is it a visa debit card or voucher and do they have any long life prepaid plans?

The business model failed when the founder died…

The same is happening to Apple with the passing of the Late Steve Jobs.
