i would wait for the Xperia Z to drop in price

Without a doubt it will drop in price(but not to $500 anytime soon), just depends what features and budget the OP wants.
Sony has never made a phone this good compared to the competition.
It has been cheaper, and if you really want a microsd slot and removable battery, it is the phone to get or the Note 2. Nexus 4 and HTC One X+ are also good choices. What's your budget?

Of course it will, but S4 release is expected to be in May. For $500 I'd import the Nexus 4, though is does have a few flaws that might be a deal breaker for you, which are: average battery life, good camera, but not as good as s3, note 2, or iphone 5. No 4G, removable battery, or micro sd slot.
It does have an awesome cpu,gpu, latest version of android, direct updates, solid premium build. Look up reviews on youtube, best experience you can have with android.
Sony Xperia Z is going to be released in a few weeks which is the best phone out but its $749 on release, but wouldnt take long for it to drop to $650.

Cheapest I know online is eglobal or woodhouse Eglobal doesn't really have a good reputation with mobiles phones(my friend didn't have a problem with them), woodhouse are satisfactory according to whirlpool users.

if you look past the lacklustre design the S3 is still one of the best phones available commercially
as for kogan… let's just say their price is cheaper than brick and mortars for a reason..
