A New PS3 HDD

Hey, I currently bought a new 12gb ps3 super slim around a month back and i have already run out of data due to game updates. That is why i was thinking of installing a new hard drive to the PS3. To do this i require a Official PS3 HDD Mounting Bracket and a compatible HDD. I am looking to buy these products as cheap as possible, but still having a good HDD. I hope for the HDD to be over 100GB. So I need your help in finding the lowest price both for the mounting bracket and compatible HDD. I don't mind if the items are on ebay. I'm hoping to get the mounting bracket for around $10-15 and the compatible HDD for around $20-35. As you can see i'm not willing to spend to much on this upgrade.

Thank you and any help is appreciated. :D

  • The hard disk is just a 2.5" notebook SATA hard disk. It will cost you from about $50 for a new 320GB or so. You might be able to get a smaller one from someone who is upgrading the drive in their computer, you could ask at computer repair shops or swap meets etc. As far as the bracket, last time I looked they were not available yet. I would think you would still be able to slide the drive in and make contact with the socket, and perhaps pad the gap with "pillows" of newspaper, or wrap the drive with electrical tape etc, just to provide enough support to hold the drive snugly. As long as you aren't moving the console around a lot it should be sufficient to hold it. A bit of a "Macguyver" solution but it should work. I'm not sure what happens with the operating system/setup etc, as there is a permanent 12GB "drive" inside the box as well as this new drive.

    • actually the mounting bracket was released and is avaible at many shops. This is what i'm thinking of buying for $12 using a gift card i have. http://www.jbhifionline.com.au/game/ps3/ps3-hard-drive-mount…

So all i need now is a HDD. Do you know of anywhere in the ACT to get one for around $20-30

      • There you go. I had a hell of a time trying to find one last time I looked, I hadn't realised they had been released. Looking at ebay, the $12 JB deal seems to be pretty good.

MSY (Fyshwick) would be the cheapest place I could recommend, at $50 for a new 320GB. http://www.msy.com.au/Parts/PARTS.pdf I don't think many places would stock anything smaller and they wouldn't be much cheaper, so I suggest looking at the second-hand market if you are aiming for $25-ish.

        • What would be the best brand to get?

        • They are all pretty good for this application, Seagate, WD, Hitachi, really doesn't matter. Beggars can't be too choosy if you are going for cheap.

        • your great thinking gave me an idea. A good bargainer knows how to recycle. So what i did was to take a old 2.5 sata from a old toshiba laptop. What i want to do know is completely wipe it, it's 80GB. The Model is: Toshiba Disk Drive MK8032GSX HDD2D32. Can you please reply saying whether this will work and how to wipe it clean of old folders and the windows operating system

        • Don't worry, the PS3 will take care of that and erase and format the drive, prior to installing the PS3 operating system. You will lose everything on the old drive. Plenty of instructions out there using Google or youtube for the procedure on hard disk upgrades.

Toshiba 9.5mm 80GB 2.5in. 5400rpm SATA drive, should be OK.

        • thankyou your superior intelligence has saved me $50
