Samsung Galaxy Beam $399 @ Dick Smith

60

Ive seen it cheaper by $10 on ebay but as a grey import from ebay. This is an older phone running on android 2.3 though, might be useful for those who need the projector.

  • Anyone got this? or know anyone that does?

Father has asked about a convenient projector to show friends stuff… i don't know if the projector is a gimmick..

    • This projector only does 640x360 pixels and it also won't be very bright. You need a pitch black room to see the image clearly.

      Conclusion
The Samsung Galaxy Beam is a gimmicky phone, with niche appeal, but it's not a bad effort. If the idea of a pocket projector appeals to you, it's good enough quality to show off your videos to an audience (though perhaps without the detail and brightness you'd want for an important business presentation). But the fact is that it's a mid-ranking Android smartphone that you could pick up for half the price without the projector.

    • It's a gimmick, but it works OK.
Reviews are good for the projector component.

I imagine its good in bed to beam images onto ceiling for unknown reasons.

if you get this be sure to get a stand for the phone so you can go hands free. Your going to be disappointed this thing ain't waterproof

      Youthful design in slim body
Hot style factor with an attractive, highly desirable…

    • I suspect the colours won't be vibrant enough for your satisfaction. You'd be better off looking at the screen.

  • Well i have played around with the projector, it does need a completely dark room to get the most out of it. The phones a bit chunky but impressive when it comes out of the pocket. We sell it at our store for $450, it comes with 2 batteries and a separate charging dock so you can charge your spare battery while you use your projector.

As for the phone itself, I personally havent used the phone. Assuming the speed or the android version wont be a concern for a person buying it.

Well i dont think its a GREAT deal from DS. The price is inappropriate for a gingerbread or an eclair. If you can wait a couple more months, youll probably get it around $350 or $300.

I've got this phone and i've had it for a few months. It's a good phone. Battery is 2000mah and does about 3 hours of projection. As for the projection it has to be in a pitch black room. I project around 50-60inch and watch movies it's decent enough.

The only downside is it's a bit chunky and 512mb ram. Also you can't adjust the projection so you have to put the phone in the exact location you want. As far as i'm aware it should be getting the jelly bean update. Good phone. I consider it be comparable to an S2 with a projector built in.

As for Dicksmith i consider their staff, refund policy and repair support very questionable and would never buy anything from them again. I sent my Beam in to get fixed for a cracked screen it's been 6 weeks…

  • Seems way overpriced for such an old phone

  • Key to note is that the deal is ONLINE ONLY, not in stock ("Backordered. Product ships on arrival. ETA: Unavailable"). Plus add for shipping (eg. to metro Melbourne is $4.95), and does not qualify for click and collect. I suspect they are grey imports of sorts, as I didn't think this model had been released in Australia. Tricky Dicky…

  • ive got this phone and despite the naysayers, its a great phone. It doesn't need a pitch black room to use the projector, but recommended for movies ie. detail. Good price although i'm still waiting for the jellybean update which has been quite annoying.. but then again, don't let me fool you - get a mainstream/high end/run of the mill phone ;)
