Cheap international roaming charges

Hey OzBargainers,

Anyone there have useful tips on how to keep international roaming charges low ?

If I activate this sim ( http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/89908 ) as an iPad sim, am I able to use the 3GB of data overseas ?

Thanks for your input.

I will be buying a local sim to avoid bill shock :)

Another question has arisen

If I buy a local sim card from Hong Kong and use to receive calls from friends in Australia. Do I pay anything to pick up the call ?

Only cheap way is not to roam (though I remember there was a BigW sim with low(er) roaming call charges a while back).
I tend to just grab a local pre-pay sim as I arrive, then text or email everyone my new (temporary)number. No chance of nasty bill shock that way!

My advice, use a local carrier in the country you are visiting. If none exists, go for an international roaming sim.

P.S. no, you won't be able to use it overseas (or it'll charge $15.36/MB, the 3GB is a bonus credit that is only for use in Australia.

  • Thank-you for the suggestions and advice. I'm set on buying a local sim now :)

  • What I usually do when I get off the plane is buy a pre-paid sim in the airport.
Just get what ever one gives you the most bang for your buck on a recharge.
When we went to Fiji Vodaphone happen to be the best, got something like 50mins of chat time back to Australia on a $25 recharge.
