[WA] Student Assistance Payment up to $250/Student (ServiceWA App & Account Required) @ WA Department of Education

530

I'm not a fan of this, I'd rather the money be used on the health system or something more needed but this may help a few people out.

The WA Student Assistance Payment helps parents and carers with the cost-of-living pressures associated with sending their children to school.

The second round of the payment is now open, with claim submissions available through the ServiceWA app.

All Western Australian school students in Kindergarten to Year 12, with a valid WA student number (WASN), are eligible for this cost-of-living payment.

You can claim $250 for each secondary student and $150 for students attending primary school or Kindergarten.

To claim the payments, parents and carers are encouraged to set up a ServiceWA account. More information is available at wa.gov.au/servicewaapp

All claims must be received by Friday 4 July 2025.

17% of children in Western Australia live in poverty. Almost 1 in 5.

    • +2

      f… thats a bad stat.

    • +4

      So target those kids.

      I don't need it.

      • +13

        Don't claim it then.

How would you propose the state government (which has no access to tax data) accomplish this?

People are crying out for cost of living relief. This is what that looks like at a state level.

        Damned if you do…

        • What stops this student relief payment from being misused or misappropriated by parents?

          • +6

@TheFreaK: In third world countries, the politicians go around distributing blankets and opening buffets in front of polling booths with their faces plastered everywhere.

They don't give a crap about misuse. They just know what works for masses. I've tried talking to my friends and colleagues about mining tax, fossil fuel subsidies, Mark McGowan taking a job at Woodside after resigning from his govt role, gas exports and taxation. But they just want to talk about electricity and back to school handouts.

            • +1

@ccir: It's a lot harder to misuse food or blankets than an open cheque

              • @TheFreaK: Yeah I'm agreeing with you. They don't care if it's misused. They only care about what's the most efficient way to stay in power.

          • +5

@TheFreaK: How would you misappropriate it? Do you know what it costs to send a kid to school? When you offset this payment against those costs, it is but a drop in the ocean.

@Make it so: $150 a week for kindergarten kid that I'm paying $400+ a week for.

$150 is a rounding error by the end of the year.

          • @TheFreaK: You cynic.

          • +1

@TheFreaK: nothing. i had to get a new car battery yesterday. i guess this pays for it.

but yeah, a fair amount of it will go on Emu Export and horrific premix.

          I didn't last time.

However, if I don't it doesn't get reallocated to someone in need. It's just retained by the government to be wasted elsewhere.

    • By what definition?

      • +1

The stat comes from here, if you're genuinely interested.

        • Looks like children living in a household where the income is less than half the median income, for the nation I'm guessing

Shouldn’t have voted Roger Cook and we wouldn’t be in this mess

  • Thanks for reminder. Lodged it now

  • Thanks Op

I work for Perth metro hospitals. Over the easter period we didnt have allied health for the entire period because of wage cuts. We had patients who desperatly needed physios, OT, speech review and social worker to solve their housing issues. So what happened ? These patients sat for four days in the wards occupying beds that sick people in ED or ramped up ambo could use.

The states biggest hospitals Charlies and Royal Perth is always in code yellow. Quality of care is poor but because these government wants easy election votes they give away money to kids.

Another issue is that a vaste majority of people have dropped of their health insurance because of increased cost of living adding more pressure on public system

    • What do you mean when you say the vast majority of people have dropped their insurance? In the Dec 24 quarter general treatment policies went up by 170k.

    • +2

Overpopulation has come home to roost. Not just in the health system.
There's plenty of ppl who cash in on going the ED to avoid paying a GP. Immigrants especially love that hack.

Damn that app gets a lot of access to your personal information on your phone

    • +2

Complete the online form instead https://www.education.wa.edu.au/wasap/claim
It still needs you to submit your personal details and upload 100 points of identification.

    • +2

Yep, there's quite a few people that see it for what it is - a carrot to get better uptake of the app. Which leads to some pretty wild conspiracy theories.

This time round it looks like they're making it a bit easier to access alternative methods. Which may allay some of the "but I can't use the app" cries. Although I see a few "I don't have 100 points of ID because I lost it and didn't get it replaced. Why won't the government just give me hundreds of dollars without proof of who I am? I am being discriminated against". That kind of thing. Some people are determined to live life on hard mode.

  • For some reason, I cannot find or have my kid WA school ID as my kid is at kindy school.

    • get the student# from the school

  • +3

Parents will probably use it to fund their Nintendo Switch 2 pre-order!!

  • Anyone got a bargain for $650?

Maybe 1 hour less ambo ramping

  • +4

To anyone who doesn’t like this / is complaining about it not being means tested / says they don’t need it, then:
    - just don’t claim it (so the money is retained to be spent or otherwise wasted elsewhere); or
    - claim it and donate an equivalent amount to your charity of choice (and feel self-righteous about yourself).

    • -1

      Or vote better next time.

      • This option is not mutually exclusive of the above two. In fact, you can vote worse or not at all next time and do either of the above.

        • You are correct. I ought to have said "And vote better next time"

          • @tenpercent: That’s your subjective opinion. Oppo are an amateurish mess in WA is mine.

            • @Lois Price: There are other options. As the upper house results showed.

              • @tenpercent: Let’s be honest. Only one other viable option - which is actually how I voted for the LC.

    • I had conservative rellos who hate the ALP with a passion, but they all took the $900 Wayne Swan handed out during the GFC and pissed it up against the wall on crap. After months of swearing they'd never take it, it was a bribe, blood money, end of the world etc.
I expect the same will happen with this assistance.

      • +1

Plot twist… the rellos were taxpayers so the $900 was basically just a partial refund.

        • Tell them,not me

      • The temptation of a good deal or 'free' money is too hard to resist for many..principles or not.

        • I agree, but there's principles, and then there's rank hypocrisy.
