  • 25$ at Bridgestone Tyre Centre

    • I called 3 different Bridgestone tyre in ACT, giving me three different quotes ($40, $35 & $30)!

  • $16, DIY. It's a pretty simple task: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z6Ld7MjIbvo (go to 5mins for instructions)

    • These plugs are not for road use! They are a temporary fix to get you home…. yes a lot of people use them for permanent fix but are dangerous for normal Hwy usage

      • I've just got them done by a mechanic… He said it was fine, and that most people do this; it's safe apparently.

        $20.

        • Its fine if they take the tyre off and plug and patch it or use one of those mushroom shaped plugs from the inside. These quick fix ones are made for getting the car home until it can be taken off and done properly. They are dangerous for continued Hwy use. Yes you can do it and a lot of people do but it is not very safe.

This is what they always do though, isn't it, when you ask for a puncture repair… Which is what I got today

        • @inose:
          Yes those ones are fine!
I was referring to battler's post, for the stab in from the outside plugs http://www.supercheapauto.com.au/online-store/products/SCA-T…

Great for getting back on the road to make it home or to the shop but dangerous for extended use

        • @QLDtightarse:

Yes, that's what I'm talking about. The mechanic used that and said this is done at most places, and is fine.

        • Dont take my word for it but that mechanic just did the dodgy
Plugged tyres need professional assessment ASAP and thereafter may be suitable only as low-speed, bush travel.
I have added just 2 articles that are official government specs but feel free to google "tyre plug safety"

Look at number 16 in vehicle standards

          Please get it repaired properly

  • I just took mine (SUV size) to Bob Jane, quoted $35. I live in an expensive town though.

  • I got charged $30 at Beaurepaires. So that seems to be normal.

  • When I called around K-Mart were the cheapest in my area ($31 as you say). They have a pretty large network which makes it easy to sort out any warranty issues. Wouldn't go down the DIY route for safety reasons not to mention how much time it will take.

Never had a tyre issue until last year and within 3 months I had been to K-Mart 3 times for repairs. Luckily nothing in the sidewall which would have been very costly.

  • If you mention that you will bring the wheel in they might do it cheaper since they dont haev to remove the wheel from the car.

Assuming you have already changed to a spare for the time being.

I wouldnt want to pay much more the $15 since the cost of the plug is $4-8 and it takes about 1 min to do once the wheel is off

  • go to a no name chain

was $20 last time i did it

also you have to weigh up safety vs. tyre life

if the tyre is half worn… replace the tyre

    • depends on the cost of the tyre. Not chucking a $180 tyre if it can be plugged at 50%….

    • If it's the front tyres on a FWD, you may need to change both, and some even advise to change all 4 at the same time to prevent pulling.

  • Place the repaired tire on the real wheel/s, never front.
