Cheapest 4G Telstra Phone

Hi there, I recently moved address and was forced to move away from my Optus phone number as no coverage. Telstra post-paid is very expensive, so i went with the prepaid encore plans, as the $50 recharge gets you $950 calls and 3.8GB data(much better value than their postpaid with their $50 cap getting you $600 calls and 1GB data).

I was able to borrow a friends phone compatible with Tesltra's 850mhz frequency, but need to get a more permanent solution. So what is the best cheap option as data and reliable coverage are all I need.

  • Not sure about the phone, but can you link me to that encore prepaid plan.

https://onlineshop.telstra.com.au/prepaid-mobile/ click see all offers. See the $50 one that is $950 calls and $50 credit. Then checkout : http://www.telstra.com.au/mobile-phones/prepaid-mobiles/extr… and note the BROWSEPLUS49 which is 3gb extra data, you just text BROWSEPLUS49 to 1257587. Plus you get free calls 6pm to 6am to standard Australian Lines
EDIT: The first thing I did was buy the $10 woolworths SIM Card Pack, and that got $220 calls and 1.3GB data. When I use that, I will be doing the $50 recharge

      • Thanks, but as I see it, the 3GB data pack is an additional $49/month.

No, coz you get $50 credit and $950 bonus calls and text etc. So you just use $49 credit of the $50 you buy, and purchase the $49 plus pack. This leaves you $1 credit, $950 calls and text, 3.8gb data. This works, as I did it with the $30 starter pack for $10. Activated, chose the encore, then purchased browserplus10 and browserplus20. I now have $0 credit, $220 calls and text, 700MB data, 200MB data, and 400MB data

        • Does they $50 credit have to be used within 30days? Can't you just use it to recharge for the next month?

If you have to use the credit within 30 days, a data pack is the only thing that it can be used on?

        • It expires after 30 days, so you need to use it towards something within that period.

        • Actually, no, it doesn't expire if you recharge before the current month expires, it simply rolls over, up to a maximum of $300. Once your balance reaches $300 you will not be able to recharge, so before it reaches that point, simply purchase something, or do a credit me-to-u, but remember, on prepaid you can only transfer $10 a day.

  • Telsta has the Frontier on Pre-Paid for $299 which is a ZTE made phone. LTE (4G) phone with the Telstra Blue-Tick rural rating too.

    Specs and whatnot here
    Telstra press release here

Should be basically anywhere that sells Telstra Pre-Paid phones… I saw that my local independent phone shop had them before xmas… From the brief look i had of it it looked like it was basically stock Android 4.0 as well; which is a huge positive in my book at least

    • Little bit about the phone http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/2011368

Good cpu/gpu for the price, but camera and storage is a let down(does have micro sd slot)

    • I've been keeping an eye on this phone. Only thing i have against it is that it might be one of those cheap plastic 'Made in China' imported electronic goods things. because i think ZTE is China. But how is the battery life for this phone anyways?
