Quality chef knives set of 2 or 3?

I'm interested in Japanese knives or quality kitchen knives with thinner blades. Any suggestions? Been looking at some different brands around the place (king of knives and other shops) but would love to get something decent for under $150 if possible.

I'm a rep for a store but ignore that for the moment if you can. Global is the brand you're after. Consistently gets great customer feedback, stellar reviews and you can probably pick up the two basics (Cooks Knife and a Paring Knife) for around $150. I don't think there's anything else in the market that ticks all those boxes at the price point you're after. Just an opinion though

Thanks mate, was wanting something with a harder steel than the globals if possible. The globals seem to be ok, but they are kind of the lower end of what I was wanting. I was after a utility or boning knife and a 20cm chef / cooks knife, both knives will not see hard chopping so i'm wanting thin, hard blades if possible. I'm probably not going to get anything under $200 but it's worth a try if someone knows of anything.

      • Ah. Sorry it's hard to tell from your initial post! If you can find MAC knives that's probably the only other suggestion I've got. You can get a good blade for a decent price with them, the link below I don't think ships to AUS but you can find them around

I am a qualified chef, I say that because everyone is a masterchef. I have been a Chef for more than 20 years. My suggestion is to buy Victorinox Swiss Classic knives. Dont buy ceramic blades, drop them and they break in two. Most Chefs that I know use Victorinox knives as they want them to last a long time and be cheap. A Chefs knife is around the $120 mark. Anyway that's my thoughts.

    • Can you give some basic tips or some links to sites giving advice on maintaining a good set of knives?

Much like the posted i'm looking for some decent knives but I have no idea how to take care of them.
