Optus Post Paid Mobile Price Hike

Howdy,

For those that haven't received the memo; Optus is raising their post paid mobile phone plan prices again. I just got an email saying that my $49 plan is moving to $55.

Thing that annoys me is that I was originally on a $35 plan (I think it was for 40GB). which moved to $49 (I think it was 60GB, but I get a $10 per month credit + 40GB extra data), so paying $39

So after an hour on chat….as it seemed my bill was going to go from $39 to $55, I'll be moving to $40 for 70GB (for the first 12 months); then $45 for 70GB thereafter; since they've kept the $10 per month discount. I know now for the first 12 months its only a dollar… but its just the screw around that's really getting to me.

Really I only use about 10GB of data a month. Disappointing that more and more companies are not offering post-paid 5G plans with a decent (20GB-40GB) data allowance for any reasonable price.

I'm contemplating whether to move to another provider but just worried about coverage, should this be a concern? Either way, I think $40 per month ($480 per year) - there's a bit of a cost saving opportunity here. I notice that 'Felix Mobile' does Vodaphone 5G is $25pm for 25GB ($300 per year); saving $180, that's a few dinners out, you know? or is what I'm getting/offered decent value for money?

Just curious about the general consensus; stick with the bigger boys, or move? p.s What ever happened to companies 'honoring' legacy plans? that seems to all disappeared.

Coles Mobile 365 day plan is $179 at the moment with 210gb of data for the year. So 17gb per month for $14.91 a month. Also on the Optus network. Unlimited national calls too.

  • If you are in Melb go Vodafone. Optus is just shit.

am on $49 small optus choice with 10$ discount applied as i was on $35 plan previously, and forcefully moved up without consultation in may 2023
Confirmed with optus support that $10 discount will be ongoing.
For context, Australia's inflation rate has been decreasing over this period. In May 2023, the annual inflation rate was 5.6% , and by January 2025, it had declined to 2.5% . Therefore, the annual increase in the phone plan (7.42%) exceeds the average inflation rate during this timeframe in Albo's Australia

Wtf Mintee thread with sufficient information and context to provide commentary??? R U OK?

    • But here, the information is relevant to the discussion.

I'm not sure why anyone would use Optus post paid, unless they're rorting a work phone/device incentive…but in that case they wouldn't care less about a price rise.

You can get 25gb of 5G on Telstra through Aldi for $29 with unlimited data rollover.

Why would you pay for so much data you don't need?

      • International calls.
      • Use WhatsApp or similar for free.

With elderly it's difficult. They still want their phone, not mobile in most cases.

      • Yeah.. not needed for me at all

  • Just curious about the general consensus; stick with the bigger boys, or move?

Moved to yearly prepaid for this reason a few years ago as all the post paid plans just seem bad value unless you hammer the data. I'm mostly on wifi, so only use under 20gb a month at max, some months only 5gb. So a yearly block of data works great for me.

Even then, I got this text from Optus about my prepaid plan that renews in 10 months time

Hi there, thanks for being with Optus. We're changing our Optus Flex Plus Plans from 28/4/25, giving more data inclusions for a higher price

Oh how kind of them….giving me more data, oh wait but will be charging me more on the renewal. LOL

I'm happy with Woolworths, because of the 10% off for Everyday Rewards card holders and a 10% off shop each month.

I'm on the "$60" plan that gets me 150GB/month of 5G capped at 250 Mb/s, cost me $54 up front, and I get back about $20 by doing a $200 shop each month, so it costs me $34.

The OP could go on the "40" plan that gets them 55GB/month of 5G capped at 150 Mb/s, costs $36 up front, and with a 10% shop every month would cost even less. It'd only take a $70 shop at Woolworths to make that as cheap as Aldi, on the same network, with twice as much data.

  • A plan in 2025 without data banking seems bonkers.

Really I only use about 10GB of data a month.

Get on the cheapest belong plan. It has data banking and you can buy dirt cheap data off the interwebs if you're desperate.

  • I pay $58 total for two $49 plans - these were originally a long-discontinued $25 plan which morphed into this $49 plan and now to this $55 plan.

I got the email saying my bill was going up to $55 for each plan and immediately started waiting in the chat queue until I saw the final sentence saying that this change would not affect existing discounts.

So expect I’ll be up to $35 pm for each of these plans which is enough to make me start looking at alternatives..

  • Could you swap to Moose or Amaysim ? Thoses providers are on Optus.
Much cheaper and that removes the headache of dealing with Optus support.

  • Their loss. Just move to Moose, Amaysim, catch, spintel. They all use Optus if that's what you like and you will be spending much less. Personally I am on an old Amaysim plan and each year they are giving me half price 1 year plan. This plan is up for renewal and will only cost me around $100 for 180gb, calls, sms and even some international calls. It's only 4g but I do think that other plans are 5g.

  • Ditch them

I mean you are crazzy to have continued staying with them IMO. I wont stay with them/join them for even 1 minute

  • move, optus is the worst.
Makes you return fetch tv which you've been actively been paying for 5 years.
Bitten too many times, shit cellular service shit customer service. use amaysim or something but never direct

  • Thanks for everyones thoughts; sounds like it is best to move :D i'll hunt next week to save some cash. 4G/5G doesnt bother me, so long as I can stream my spotify in the car I dont really care, and the speed required for that isnt much

  • I went 5G and the higher speed it gets me because my phone is also the internet connection for my PCs.

Why does someone who only uses a small amount of data need 5G when that costs more?

    • One thing that is confusing me is…. some plans say '4G network coverage with speeds limited to 150Mbps'; next plan: '5G network coverage with speeds limited to 150Mbps'…. soooo what does it matter if im on 4 or 5G if my speed is limited? explain please
