How to Evaluate a Solar Quote (in Perth) ?

I was just quoted around 6k for 15 Eging panels and a SAJ hybrid inverter for what seems to me to be a very simple installation (single storey, brick/Colourbond) from a highly-rated major Perth solar installer.

It seems to me that this is a mid-range price for low-price components, but there are so many variables that it is hard to be sure.

On solarquotes, they give some price ranges for systems using certain panels, but things like

“Reviewers report paying from 3k to 11k for a 6.6kw system using SunTech panels” (not an actual example)

give price ranges that are unusably large.

I’ll keep getting quotes but I’d really like to know how to evaluate them better.

Did you get 2 other quotes?

    • Yes, I have other quotes, but for different panel/inverter combinations, so it is hard to make sensible comparisons.

      • What's the expected life of each installation and the kW. Work out price/kW/year. That will give you a good rough comparison.

  • Get more quotes. That seems a bit expensive.

  • I paid $7700 in Perth about 6 months ago for 6.6kw, 15 panels and hybrid inverter. There were other cheaper providers but I went with a company that has been around for many years.

    • How much cheaper were the competition?
Did the company you go with include a warranty and how long?

    • What were the panels and the inverter?

I wouldn't mind paying 7.7k for well-known brands with a decent history of reliability and performance installed by a reputable company.

      • Went with a well rated company (PSW) got 15x Jinko satin black 440w panels and a 3 phase 5kw growatt inverter installed for $5500 on a brick/colourbond house around a year ago.

      • Solarhart Silhouette panels, 15x440w each, bifacial, 30 year warranty. 5kw Goodwe hybrid inverter (ready for future battery purchase), 10 year warranty with option to purchase extensions from the manufacturer. Single phase wiring at the property. This system was a full replacement after my previous inverter failed at just shy of 10 years (5 year warranty at the time of sale). I couldn't easily find a provider that would simply install a new inverter with the existing panels. I paid additional costs for removal of old panels and relocation of the inverter away from full sun exposure. I didn't shop around extensively for many quotes (please forgive me Ozbargainers) but could see there were packages being advertised for ~5k, these seemed just an enticement to get in the door and upsell.

    Research on solarquotes website.

I don't recognise Eging or SAJ.

Maybe stick with volume budget brands like Trina, Jinko and tried and tested inverters like Goodwe / Sungrow

    • Agree with using solar quotes as a place to research; look at their old blogs and customer reviews, etc.

But since the company sold late last year, there’s a lot more advertising masquerading as blogs, the quote process is considerably worse, and there seems to be a bunch more dodgy companies on there than before.

For VIC at least, comparing Feb this year to late 2023.

      • I got 3 quotes from them 2 years ago and decided not to go with any of their companies. The reason is I think they mix and match different panels and inverters than put a price on and argue how good it is when basically all of them were budget brands with just a $1k mark up vs everyone else. This is northern metro Victoria.

        They did
        Trina + Goodwe
        Jinko + Huawei
        etc

  • I went with PSW and paid $6,090 for 10.5kW Solar PV Installation (26 x REC TwinPeak5 405W Solar Panels, 1 x 8kW GE 3-Phase Inverter, 1 x Goodwe 3-Phase Homekit).

This was a clearance sale they had a few months back.

  • Love the # panels. Assuming the are the smallest wattage /panel then …, but if they are cutting edge wattage then the okay. BUT no info on $$$, so no use in making a real suggestion.

  • What I found was on average a reasonable price for quality gear is about $1k per kw of panels give or take. Any cheaper than that for quality panels and inverter system, then you're in a good state.

  • I just added 6.56kw of REC panels and a 6kw Fronius symo (three phase) inverter to my system for under $7k… down in tassie where the STC subsidy is less generous. I’d say that’s a bad deal.

    • down in tassie

      You have sunshine?

      • Plenty
