    • yep just realised that M4 charges twice if you enter via haberfield. no wonder my top-ups was going brrr

      • +1

You sure that’s not a mistake? You should only be charged once per trip on the westconnex, at least I have been

Checkout which Pollies have shares and association with transurban….

      • +7

Checkout the retired pollies who work there.

The NSW bureaucrats who negotiated the deal with TransUrban now work there too.

    • +5

It's another tax on low/middle income people mostly. Can't afford to live close to work?

      PAY THE POOR TOLL

    • I came down from QLD ( same tag) and spent $ 214 in 8 days travelling Blacktown to Hornsby and back to visit my 98 year old Mum at Wahroonga House retirement home.
Did I get it in the shorts or is this a discriminatory theft and a breach of Australian States free trade laws under our Constitution. This is a Cartel
Ned Kelly was an absolute Gentleman compared to this Mob of Italian thieves. Transbridge was the start of Transurban when it built the first Gateway bridge and realised Tolls were legally printing money.
      End Rant!

  • +18

Absolutely obscene amount of money spent on tolles and motorways. Imagine if we diverted a small portion of the to frequent bus, train services, well connected cycle and footpaths. Sigh…

    • +2

100% agree. Public transport and roads for active transport bring much higher socio-economic benefits than roads for cars per every tax payer dollar spent.

    • +12

And most people don't realise these toll road are owned by overseas private familes and investment firms.
Even fewer realise that these toll companies often put non-compete agreements in place with the government and local councils, PROHIBITING the government from building new road infrastructure that would compete with the toll road.
It's way too easy to bribe… sorry I mean lobby politicians to bend over for large corporations.

      • +3

Melbourne's citylink was the most profitable toll road in the world last year, massive (profanity) scam

    • +2

My partner easily spends that amount in 3 days by just taking the M4 and M8 to work, be it that she is a ER nurse and anytime. She is an ER nurse, and any time saved just to get that extra rest is a saved just to get that extra rest is godsend.

      • +4

What does your partner do for work?

      • +3

Let's put your partner aside for a second, are you getting enough rest, are you getting enough rest?

        • User name checks out

    • +5

A lot of people in Sydney would easily spend that.

    • I'm at about $130 a week - but work pays for it

      • +1

        I'm at $26.48 for 31.3km - I'm getting closer to that $1/KM rate.

If it were my money I wouldn't be paying it.

    • +7

lol, 1 return trip is $24.50.

      • Gotta pay to drive your car yaknow? /s

    • +5

what a silly comment, tolls are nearly $20+ one way on many routes. Do you even live in Sydney?

    • +1

      Lol,

Wolli Creek to Mt. Druid is easily $24 via m5, m7. Common bro.

      • +5

        to Mt. Druid

that's only if you take the troll road

        • I mean it's a pretty good deal to travel from Wolli Creek to Azeroth on $24

    • +1

      The West Tax

    • If I did 5 days mine would come in at just under $160. 2 days comes in at $58.32

  • +7

    Tolls are regressive taxation.

    • +2

it's mostly money to private corporations because the state government thought it was a good idea to compulsorily acquire private properties for the land and then gift that land to private corporations who built the motorways partially using government money and then had/have the 'right' to charge motorists for the privilege of using the roads.

      • Compulsory acquired? You know what this means don't you? They're acquiring it compulsorily!

        • I'm not sure what you're trying to say.

    • -3

      It is also user pays

if someone chooses to live in an area reliant on toll roads they should have factored it into their rent or purchase price decision and so their housing costs should be lower. It should hardly be a surprise

    • Hey monky,

Could you turn your private messaging on?

  • +2

What about the 40% rebate ? I take tolls but never consistently enough to hit the $60 cap…

    • +2

Same boat. From what I learnt it was quietly removed with the $60 rebate being the only option.

  • +11

    LOL.. I'm literally speechless..

this is nowhere tax money should go to……

    • Its not a tax. Although tax money was sepnt building the toll roads

      • +9

Tax money is being spent to provide these toll rebates. Ultimately it is tax payer money going to the toll road operators.

      • humm.. anywhere else do you think these Service NSW bastards get there money from?

        • +3

Payroll tax, stamp duties, land tax, motor vehicle tax, gambling tax, registrations, fines, GST, mining royalties, and a bunch of other levies and duties.

          • @Hendot: You missed fuel excise which is massive. $0.506 per litre adds up fast. Say a 50km commute 100km round trip @ 6ltr/100km is $3 excise for that trip. There's 252 working days a year so say with leave and whatnot you manage to only commute ~80% of that time for 200 days leaves you paying $600/year fuel excise for that commute alone.

            • +1

@Carnal: Fuel excise is a federal tax

      • +2

They are paying money to the toll company. Lets have a think about how the government raises that money.

Every user who claims $200 of tolls could have paid a nurse for half a day, or anything else useful and productive you can think of that costs money and isn't currently being done properly.

    • Taxpayer money spent purchasing votes as always

  • +7

Terrible deal. Bring back the 40% one.

    • This was a clever and successful election campaign move last round

  • +19

Lol sell our roads to private companies then funnel tax payer money to them.

      THIS

      • Someone has to pay for the roads and maintain them. Either through tax or through tolls.

        • +3

Would have been cheaper to create a government owned corporation to do it. No banks or private corporations involved taking a slice of the funding and calling it profits.

  • Can a tag be used between multiple cars?

    • +2

I don’t think you are meant to, but it is possible. $60 cap is per tag, not per account. You would need to swap the tag into the car that is going to use a toll road each time.

      • Another loophole is to use a private tag on a car registered for business use.

    • +1

Yes, you can order additional mounts (free) and use the same tag across multiple vehicles.

You can also link multiple regos to a tag, so you don't even need the tag, but that would incur a $0.55 video matching fee unless the vehicle is a motorcycle (because there is no official motorcycle mount).

If you go through a toll gate without a tag (or tag with flat battery), and vehicle is not linked to a tag, then there will be an additional admin fee ($20?). Reason for the admin fee is due to privacy they need to go through the process to request owner details from motor registry. But the admin fee can be waived if you contact the toll operator.

      • Has anyone tried this? Does driving one car with tag and another without (video fee applicable) work out to $60 maximum?

        • Example if you have more than one tag

          Week 1 tolls
          Tag1 $80
          Tag2 $20
          License plate $65

          Rebate:
          Tag 1 - $20
          LPN - $5

          • @Hendot: Yeah thanks, that I understand. I was wondering if it’s possible to get $60 maximum across 2 vehicles.

The way browser explains it: Link one tag to a car and use that tag in another car whilst driving the linked car without a tag (video fee applicable)

I wonder if this will be maximum of $60 or $120/week

            • @sd679560: My comment was in respond to sharing the same tag with multiple cars, it is allowed, as long as the tag is used with the same class of cars (i.e. not trucks).

In addition, for cashback and rebate claims, trips using the tag on business registered cars should be excepted.

The fact that they give a license plate example suggests linking cars to a tag will be treated separately. It makes sense when you look at the toll statement, there are separate sections for tags and license plates (even though the plates are linked to the tags).

So rebates are determined for each section.

              Example:

              • Total for Tag Number 111: $100 <—- $40 rebate
              • Total for Tag Number 222: $30 <—- no rebate
              • Total for Licence Plate AAA111 (linked to tag 111): $40 <—- no rebate
              • Total for Licence Plate BBB222 (linked to tag 222): $50 <—- no rebate

In order to get the maximum rebate, you need the physical tag in the car, but this is not always possible/practical, hence not explicitly disallowed. And it is difficult to enforce.

              • Total for Tag Number 111: $140 <—- $80 rebate
              • Total for Tag Number 222: $80 <—- $20 rebate
  • Can Uber drivers pass on tolls to riders and also claim the rebate?

    • I’m not sure how it is policed, bu “for personal toll trips in a vehicle registered for private use”

      • +1

Most Uber drivers are with personal registration, and there is no way they can know if at the time it was a family member or Uber rider. Unless they across reference with Uber and the likes.

  • +6

Give me back my good driver reward discounted licence!

  • whenever I see this kind of stuff I am so glad I don't live in Sydney, it's absolutely mental that people there have to pay so much money for the privilege of sitting in traffic

    • Still less traffic than on some of the roads sans toll, so it’s all relative

  • +4

the 40% was much better, this is a massive downgrade.

  • +2

I claimed $343 for the year using the 40% method now with this new $60 method, could only claim $41 for the following year :(

    • I was in the exact same situation so i stopped paying the tolls as they can only send toll notices and cant come after you with debt collectors. Their privately owned compaines.

      • Wow, wait, WHAT?
So any LINKT, you can simply ignore? Won't they take you to court for it?

      • It's normally privately owned companies that chase people with debt collectors.
You're gonna have to give a better explanation.

  • +3

Once they scraped the 40% rebate i stopped paying tolls because i dont spend $60 a week to get this new rort of a rebate. Im still using the freeways as they're owned privately but i pay the Harbour bridge toll as that can end up in a fine because its government owned. Private toll operators can eat crap.

    • Cant that eventually affect your credit score? And I imagine when its outstanding it will start to compound with late fees?

    • I'm with you on the sentiment, but this sounds a little too sovcit.

  • +1

I hate that our income tax is being used to pay this 'Toll Relief Rebate'. It is us, as the (mostly) middle class tax payer that subsidises this for everyone else. The toll companies makes thousands of dollars, DAILY, in tolls. What a RORT.
I wish the pollies would see this thread.

I want them pull a 'China'. Just say, "Sorry mate, we're taking back these roads now, (profanity) you very much, see you later, don't let the door hit you on the way out" to these c*ntz and get our roads back where it belongs - in the hands of the people.

I can't understand why not enough people make more noise about this at every election. If I could start getting signatories, I would, pre election.
There is some talk of reform, but it can't happen soon enough.(nsw.gov.au).
    Extract

"After the former Liberal government privatised toll road after toll road, Sydney has become the most tolled city on earth."

    I HATE tolls & trolls.

  • Laughs in WA

  • They changed this so that basically only people who are likely to live in ALP electorates (ie. Western suburbs) could claim on the rebate. The old scheme was much more likely to be used by drivers from all over Sydney, including voters for other political parties, which Labor did not like.

The same reason why they changed eligibility for the Active Kids voucher. Protect the base.

  • M4 west used to be free but now both charged with M4 east too. thats greedy

    • +1

If you are talking about the section between Strathfield and Parramatta, it was not free, but private cars (on private trips) were eligible to claim cashback (less GST). The M4 cashback scheme ended around 2010.

  • I'm claiming back $1024 for the last quarter. I take the M8 & M4 each day to and from work.

  • Tfnsw are a scum organisation. They had that double charge issue which screwed me hard couple years ago https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.9news.com.au/article/377f38… and they still have ongoing issues with my account. Apparently their Spanish software vendor is cooked and they have heaps more issues they aren't speaking about in public like privacy breaches and credit card issues. Avoid the tolls
