get at least 1 more quote?

googling the part numbers, obviously theres going to be a markup + labour and associated costs to factor..
also compare installer warranty and reviews too, its not always about final dollar amount.

garage doors can be pretty costly to repair in event of issues.

Would be cheaper to DIY. Have a crack. I believe in you.

      Me:

      falls off ladder

      Oh noooo

Do not install yourself. Those loaded springs kill people every year.

        • +2

Why would they have a reason to touch the loaded spring?

          • +3

@MS Paint: Wait 'til it's sober.

@MS Paint: When you install the motor I assume the spring tension will need to be calibrated.

            • +2

@Snoozer: No. The spring is already calibrated to absorb the weight of the door so it can be lifted with ease. The lifter motor is just doing what the human is too lazy to do.

              • @MS Paint: Well all springs lose tension over time and this puts additional strain on the motor if you don't get your garage door serviced. If you're replacing the motor there's a good chance the spring calibration needs adjustment, and you'd be silly not to do this after investing >$500 on a new motor.

                • @Snoozer: If the spring needs calibration then definitely leave that part to the professionals.

      • I installed a new motor several years ago and the door lifting ẁas a 2 person job. I had to call a garage door installer to finish off the install, which was retensioning the spring . $400 is probably a good price, if it's a complete install.

  • Is this all supply and install? Or just the install for these components?

    • Everything, including install.

  • Do they need to run electrics for it? Any other potential factors (eg strata/common property) which might make the installation more complex?

    • Is my house and there is electricity socket next to it. I am replacing my 15 year old B&D

      • Unless you're getting some fancy AI/wifii/etc it sounds pretty exxy IMO.

  • I paid just under $3k for a new panel woodgrain door, about 5.2m long, with locking bolts. So price, assuming thats the door included, doesn't seem bad.

    • I'm guessing the door is already installed.

    • We reusing the existing door.

      • Then seems a bit pricey.

Try a roller door supplier vs BD/Gliderol/Steeline direct.

      • Very expensive, then. You can easily do seals yourself. Just need to figure out which one to purchase based on your door model and cross-section.

The motor is a bit of a pain, can be done solo with a bit of difficulty. But easily with two. If it's a one-for-one replacement, you can just reuse existing brackets.

      • We got quoted for a brand new door, rails, motor, everything for $3500.

  • looks cheap

If you're getting a gate seems alright.

If you're just getting the automated motor installed… I paid $900 for two motors installed about 5 years back.

Dude spent a good 4-5 hours adjusting my old ass gate and the metal frames which made me feel pretty bad given how much he was charging lol.

Granted, I picked the generic (made in china) motor options - still working to this day BUT it looks like they're giving you branded sht
