Incredibly interesting book about the influence of the internet/social media on younger generations, and the lack of play-based learning and overprotection of kids in the real world, and how it's resulting in isolated children more likely to have mental health issues as they get older.

Anyway, read it. It's good.

An urgent and insightful investigation into the collapse in youth mental health, from the influential social psychologist and international bestselling author

Jonathan Haidt has spent his career speaking truth and wisdom in some of the most difficult spaces - communities polarized by politics and religion, campuses battling culture wars, and now the mental health emergency hitting teenagers today in many countries around the world.

In The Anxious Generation, Haidt shows how, between 2010 and 2015, childhood and adolescence got rewired. As teens traded in their flip phones for smartphones packed with social media apps, time online soared, including time spent comparing oneself to a vast pool of others. Time engaging face-to-face with friends and family plummeted, and so did mental health.

But this is not just a story about technology; this profound shift took place against a backdrop of declining childhood freedom and free-play, as parents over-supervised every aspect of their children's lives offline, depriving them of the experiences they most need to become strong and self-governing adults.

In this book, Haidt makes a compelling argument that the loss of play-based childhood and its replacement with a phone-based childhood that is not suitable for human development is the source of increased mental distress among teenagers. The Anxious Generation delves into the latest psychological and biological research to show the four fundamental ways in which a phone-based childhood disrupts development - sleep deprivation, social deprivation, cognitive fragmentation and addiction. Haidt offers separate in-depth analyses of what has happened to girls, and what has happened to boys, offering practical advice for parents, schools, governments, and teens themselves. Drawing on ancient wisdom and cutting-edge research, this eye-opening book is a life raft and a powerful call-to-arms

good discussion with the author on latest episode of Ezra Klein podcast ‘Our Kids Are the Least Flourishing Generation We Know Of’ | The Ezra Klein Show

    • Absolutely true. A State politicians wife was reading this in bed one night turned to her husband and said you have to do something about this.

I guess we can be thankful she wasn't reading anything by L Ron Hubbard at the time.

@Odin does it offer any solutions?

    • +6

Yes, more play and less control in the real world, more control and age restrictions in the online world.

The violin is a string of four bowed instruments, the family is the main members of the family system of other members are: (the viola, the cello and the bass). Modern violin originated from Italian Craig mona, in 1600-1750 years to become the largest violin production center. The famous master making guitars are: Nicola Amati (nicolas, Marty), Antonio Stradivari (Antonio Stella bottom tile), and Giuseppe Guarneri (ji plug pu* melon nai); They made instruments so far are priceless. The violin's fifth tune: g, d1, a1, e2, register more than three and a half group, is all orchestra indispensable instrument, also after instruments

@Gdsamp: ludicrous - the violin said it was the most important member of the string family

the viola disagreed no one heard the bass

the cello was too busy crying in the corner

            classic family reunion

It just changes whether we can be bothered reading what you wrote. It's already a challenge, no point making it harder if you want to be heard

Except your reply goes against everything that decades of research suggests. Read up on attachment styles (and their consequences) when trying to surmise why some are (as you put) more 'mentally fragile' than others.

      that was a challenging read

    Great book

The related substack, After Babel, has further examples of the harm technology has done to childhoods (and now adulthoods) but also showcases changes you can make or advocate for.

yeah they were saying in the 70's the same about TV
80's & 90's how computers would do the same.
Then the internet, then social media.

we could go back to the printing press, books, electricity, music, etc

same BS scaremongering, yet the human race all survived & thrived..

The problem is those who make these sort of claims get publicity, maybe makes some money, then it's all forgotten when it turns out they're wrong.

      • +2

How about you actually listen to the author it's not about bannning technology

        • i never even hinted that.

It's just another remake of the " watch out! This new thing your kids are into could be their downfall" TV, Roll 'n Roll, Flower Power, Critical Thinking & Questioning Authority, Protesting, Dungeons & Dragons, Computers, Gaming, Mobile Phones, Internet, Social Media…. I'm old and Ive heard variations on all the above. The world matched on, generations got smarter, richer and lived longer.

Reminds me of Harry Dent and his 30+yrs of "the financial markets are going to fall by 30%"….he predicted the GFC & the current downturn…. Because since the mid 90's he's been telling everyone the great crash is coming. So of course he's eventually correct.

      • I can see where you are coming from, we've survived so much before all this technology came about.

Putting TV aside; computers, internet and social media and its consequences are all addressed by Haidt - with data to back it up.

The story for boys begins in the 1970s, as they slowly get pushed out of the real world, and slowly get pulled into the virtual world with the arrival of home computers and video games.
