Save Good Food from Going to Waste @ Too Good to Go Mobile App

Moved to Forum: Original Link

Reason: Perpetually free mobile app.

This app lets you save big while rescuing drool-worthy food from waste

Ever wondered where all those drool-worthy baked goods filling the cafe cabinet go at the end of the day? Well, the truth is often less appetising, with surplus food moving from the top of the menu to the bottom of the bin once the kitchen closes. That is, until Too Good To Go stepped in.

On a mission to stop unnecessary food waste across the globe, Too Good To Go is the Copenhagen-founded social impact company that has saved 350+ million meals from waste – making a positive impact on the environment, your wallet, and your taste buds.

So, how does it work? Businesses gather excess food in ‘surprise bags’ which are then available on the Too Good To Go app for you to reserve and collect at a certain time. Brimming with perfectly delicious unsold goodies, you can nab a bag at the fraction of the original price (we’re talking loose change) while businesses can unlock a little extra revenue at the end of the day. It’s a win-win-win!

Now available in select areas across Victoria and NSW, Too Good To Go has plans to expand around Australia in 2025 so you’re going to want to watch this space. After all, every meal matters!

Thank you

    Huh ?

    Member for 9 years too ??? 😲

    • your point ?

        Yes, mine…

  • Have used a few times. Mostly bakery stuff though there are some grocery stores too. Some shops better than others. But great initiative.

    • yep, mostly bakers delights and other bakeries
but a few groceries near city

  • It's a great app. But this isn't a bargain, it's a forum post.

  • Thanks for letting us know, but this isn't a bargain, it's a forum post.

I've only used it twice, and will continue to do so, but have had mixed results. YMMV.

One place clearly trying to use it as just additional sales, not really in the spirit of the idea of the app (restaurant).

Another using it to clear out stock from end of day (bakery) instead of binning.

As someone who used to be a Chef, it's a great initiative/idea, and hope it gets taken up more broadly. The amount of waste I used to have in certain kitchens I worked at was awful.

  • I’ve gotten sushi from them a couple of times. Got 12 hand rolls for $10

    • Not sure how I feel about old sushi.

So you get random stuff for $10, or do you know in advance what you are buying?

    • No you don’t. It’s just packs of bread/sushi/sandwiches etc

  • Got roll'd before and was disappointed to see just 6 soldier rolls for $8.99. Would be good to have variety but I guess you only get what they have leftover at the end of the day.

Bakers delight has been good tho. For $9.99 received full loaf, pull-apart, hot cross buns, and pizza.

    • I tried it out a couple of times, I got a cafe where they clearly took any meat out of the rolls/sandwiches before packaging it up. Must be a gym bro working there who wants the protein before they give them away.

Bakers delight is great, gets snapped up quickly though.

  • I used it a lot in Europe, but I didn't know it had been launched in Australia.

  • I wonder what Food Bank and other charities for homeless and otherwise disadvantaged people think about this

    • Why?

      • Why?

Is a crooked letter that can't be straightened

Bakers Delight used to give the stuff they didn’t sell at the end of the day to them

        • My local said the food bank didn’t want any bread products because the shelf life was too short.
Instead they sometimes donated baked goods to our volunteer groups.

        • Bakers Delight used to give the stuff

Each store is independently owned, so it would differ store by store.

    • Not happy of course.

I have seen 3 Vinnies open up within 3 kilometers of each other. It is literally Vinnies on every major intersection now.

Source: I worked at a food bank for a while.

They have a problem where they get tonnes of bread products and storing it (like freezing it) costs more than just getting new free stuff each day. Disposing of it all becomes problematic as well. Basically, old baked goods are plentiful in the supply chain.

I'm skeptical of these services, over in Europe they've become very popular and apparently do take food away from food banks. However bakers delight still donate to charities where possible, they just do this thing too.

  • If the bakery doesn't use preservatives I find by the end of the day they are already going a little stale anyway.

  • Thanks. Will give it a shot.

  • Tried it out at local bakers delight and they didn't give anything nice. Just bread and rolls and a plain scone. Yes it is more than $10 worth. But come on?? Where's the good stuff like pull aparts, custard scrolls etc? Stingey. They had plenty left over too.

    • how much did it say on the receipt? Mine was ~$30.

  • Dumpster diving is free though.
