aaNet's $5 PAYG plan

360

If you are in one of aaNet's DSLAM, this may be the cheapest ADSL2+ out there.

$5 monthly charge + excess data Charge. Unlike telstra, the excess fee is very reasonable at $1.5/GB (they have 1gb =1024 MB). Download during offpeak is only 75c!!!

So total cost (all download during peak rate):
1gb: $6.5
10gb: $20
25gb: $42.5
50gb: $80

The plan is less and less attractive as you increase your download. But at low/mid end, this plan is a bargain!

  • That's too good to be true… what's the catch?
(apart from the limited number of aanet DSLAMS)

      1. Crap bundle discount (50c..)
      2. Email with aaNet isn't that great most of time.

Other than that, aaNet is great. It is on par with internode/iinet service quality but cheaper. You get no free content what so ever. And has never upped its price after offering something ridiculously cheap. (I've had my 5gb 8mbit plan is only $39.90 for 2 years already)

  • Great deal, Here's the list of exchanges, not too shabby.
    http://www.aanet.com.au/bbnext_status.html

    • So there's nothing in SA or QLD and it's VERY limited in WA.
That being said, SA has some sensational bargains itself..

      • None in ACT either…

      • what sa bargains/who offers cheap adsl or ndsl??

        • As a Victorian, I have hardly no idea but Adam Internet springs to mind. I remember something along the lines of 40GB + 40GB usenet + 40GB peered or something like that for a good price.

        • Yeah Adam are very good.. but nowhere near this price..

  • Details here http://www.aanet.com.au/five_dollar_adsl2.html
$99.00 setup fee seems the only extra real cost and 6 months plan,
    although no early disconnect fee.

  • Pricing is guaranteed for 6 months. After that?

    • After that.. is the catch..
      it's basically a honeymoon rate I think.
after that, you would have to disconnect and pay a new setup fee to go to another supplier, or pay whatever you're asked to pay.

      • This is pure speculation. If you've been with aaNet, then you'll know they normally continue the rate after the initial 6 months. Even if they do change the plan, the new plan will be quite good as well if not better.

          Pure speculation or pure incredulity?
There has to be a catch.. based on the argument that noone else is even close to that rate.
I signed my parents up to aaNet, I have nothing against the company per se.. I just can't work out how they could break even, let alone make money from a $6.50/month 1Gb broadband plan.
The closest competitor I can find is Spin 1Gb at $9.95 (ie at about 66% more) but you have to bundle your phone service with them to get that price
and the next price up from them is iPrimus 1Gb at $19.95!! that's almost a 300% increase for the "same" service.. Once again, you have to bundle your phone to get that price.

How can aaNet continue to undercut their nearest and only competitor by 66% without a catch?
It's not speculation, it's common sense!!

  • Apparently only 50 per exchange, so you better be quick. Pity not avaible in my area, would have signed up my father as he only needs a lowMB account.

  • This is damn good. I hope other ADSL providers follow suit.

And yes….AANET email has been very shonky these past few months.

$1.50 per Gigabyte during peak periods. 75c per GB during off-peak periods.

Not really a good deal, im with TPG 150gb costing me $70 bucks
so 40gb peak and 110gb offpeak

    40gb X 1.50 = $60
    110gb x 0.75 = $82.5
    + $5 per month
    TOTAL = RIP OFF :P

Most likely i wont be able to finish this but meh speed is about 1.6mbps so not bad, although some people have been having some complications with TPG i havent maybe 2 incidents per month or even non per month

These plans are made for low-usage people, mom and pops, not for heavy downloaders.

      TPG ADSL2+ Xlite/2GB $29.99 1G + 1G

      vs.

      aaNet 1G + 1G
      $5 + $1.50 + $.75=$7.25

    • You seriously think 150gb downloaders would use this plan?

AAnet have excellent heavy use plan and their service is far more reliable then TPG.

Which part of THIS IS SUITED LOW TO MEDIUM USERS don't you understand? I typically use about 7-8 GB peak and 10GB off peak, so $24.50 is BARGAIN and with the option of not paying alot when away on holidays or months where your not at home much. Low usage user would only be pay about $10/month (assuming 4GB/month) with these guys. Show me a TPG plan for $24.50 that comes anywhere near this offer?

  • From looking at whirlpool, it seems as though they have "excess capacity" at their exchanges.
It looks like a pretty good deal, I really don't want to pay for downloads I'm never gonna use anyway.

  • Great plan - pity it's not in my parents or in-laws area, otherwise I would sign up both! If aaNet is starting to offer these "pay as you go" plans, maybe the other ISPs might start soon (like Naked DSL - most are offering that now).

    • PAYG is not a new idea. Telstra had this 8 years ago with 200mb data (which is basically no data) and $150/gb excess charge. Since then, PAYG seem more like a trick than a genuine offer.

Of course, this plan doesn't suit everyone. It is already mentioned that this plan isn't that attractive for heavy download users. But majority of australian Broadband user download less than 10gb. This plan also isn't suitable for people with strict budget. It is the joy and the curse of unshaped plans. But most sensible people can keep manage their downloads.

Unfortunately, this plan isn't available to me. But I will sign up immediately if it is. It would be a really nice xmas present.

  • does aanet count upload data as well?

    • +2

If DL > UL, they charge DL. If UL > DL, they charge UL. So what ever is greater gets charged. The only exception is in Vic, which doesn't count any upload. This is more due to very long technical glitch that was never addressed.

      • thanks, mate.

Sounds like the BB deal of all time??
Been with them for going on 4 years and find them fantastic.

As for email probs… who uses isp email servers these days??>>Primarily ISP's provide connection to the net.

Been on a special offer deal for years now (8k@$39mth). If they can do it they leave you on special deals.
Sometimes they change a starter deal if it is too much to carry but they are not into trickery like other ISPs.

With ADSL1 they only charge for download (or upload if greater).

Warning… They are NOT a "hold your hand" ISP. It is a quality connection but if you want to call re probs with your home computer best go elsewhere and pay for the cost of such service.

    Best value ISP.
