Selling a Car on FB Marketplace for Parts - What Do I Need to Do?

Hi everybody, I’m located in VIC and trying to sell my car (blown engine) on FB. I have a buyer who wants to pick it up, but I have no idea what I need to do with vicroads.

Do I do a transfer or registration? Or do I just cancel and let them pickup? Thanks

What sort of nonsense is this? /s

      • +1

        mirror == looking at you.

what kind of nonsense is your post?

    • Yes, but that usually covers cars that are roadworthy and transferring the rego.

This is more or less selling for scrap. I am not intending to sell it with active rego to avoid roadworthy certificate, as it won’t pass in its current state.

      • +3

Then cancel rego, get your refund, and write a note for the seller with your details, the cars details, the buyers details and that you sold the vehicle to them on (insert date here).

If they choose to re-register the car then they can at a later date.

        • and most probably accept minimal payment ….

have sold 2x cars over the years … that couldn't drive even 5 mins without MAJOR issues.
          1st one == $800 … 2nd one == $450.

meh. what is your time worth?

          • +3

            @simplystu:

and most probably accept minimal payment

What does that mean? Just becasueba motor ia gone doesnt mean its worth nothing. If it is a vehicle that is easy to get engine repairs for, it could be worth decent money. Eg a camry or corolla worth $10k running, engine from a wrecker for a grand, a weekend's work and youve got a decent car.

          • @simplystu: My time is worth more with you, Stu

          • @simplystu: Must have plenty of money if $450 is not worth your time.

if its for parts, take the number plates off and take them to VIC roads, ask to cancel the registration, and get a partial refund

  • +1 to the above.
by the sounds of it - car is still registered … if so, then follow what VicRoads website says.

It's a very simple process - so don't see what issue would be? … (aside from the constant scams of selling via FB marketplace)

    • If I sell it registered, I need a roadworthy which means repairing the vehicle, only to then sell it for parts?

      • Bloody roadworthy … I forgot about that.
my sister lives in VIC … even just transferring a car from my mum to my sister == $240 roadworthy (for a car only 3.5 years old).

Perhaps then … also factor that into your sell price ???

        • Motor blown wont be able to get a RWC

        • Plenty of 3.5 year old cars with bald tyres, oil leaks, broken bulbs, shit windscreen wipers, cracked windscreens, damaged seat belts…………

      • You can't get a roadworthy so cancel the rego, hand in the plates. You've got no choice.

  • Ask the buyer if they are going to put the car back on the road or just buying to part out.

If parting out then cancel rego and get your refund.

    • don't know about VIC …

but here in WA - whenever transfer car …. you get refund back on however many months owing on rego.

      • In Vic when you transfer a car the remaining rego is given to the buyer (after they pay stamp duty and provide a roadworthy certificate)

make sure you tell them to drive it on the road and really fast past the cameras

    • +8

      blown engine

You mean push the car really fast?

      • zoom zoom

      • +4

Maybe by blown engine OP means that they have put a supercharger in their Camry?

      • Yaba daba doo

  • Isnt there some clause about a buyer being able to compete a roadworthy within xx days? Im not familiar with Vicroads, but thought id seen this before.

You need a roadworthy certificate to transfer rego INTO your name, not to notify vicroads youve sold the car?

Ask the buyer if they want it registered. If not, just cancel.

  • +1

cancel it for your safety. they can use the plate on another car.

Can you meet me at the park?

  • +2

Take the plates off, snap them in half and take a photo. Go on the VicRoads site and cancel the rego. Sell the car for parts with no plates.

    • +2

Yep that’s what I’m going to do. Thanks!

The question you should be spitballing here is all the different ways you're gonna get scammed.

    • +1

Pretty hard to get scammed if someon comes to you, gives you money, then tows your broken car away.

      • Scammers bring offsiders so you're outnumbered, meticulously inspect the merch, haggle down the price, demand some kind of warranty, offer to pay in crypto, fail to come to terms, deal falls through… your unregistered car mysteriously disappears overnight.

I've sold a crap load of stuff and have never had an issue. If people are happy to steal a car, why on earth would they choose a shirbox with a blown engine?

  • As an ex-NSW person living in VIC it's different here, although I've only sold one vehicle in VIC.

In NSW you sell the registered car then lodge a notice of disposal then everything is the new owners problem.

In VIC you are supposed to have a roadworthy certificate if you're selling with rego (or you have to cancel the rego and not provide any), similar process on notice of disposal/transfer then.

Can you even fill in the notice of disposal without a roadworthy? Or is that only needed for the new owner to register the vehicle?

(on the flip side, no annual Pink slips is nice in VIC vs NSW… although I do wonder if that means more shitboxes on the road).

  • DO NOT TAKE PHOTOS OF YOUR PLATES OR BLOCK THEM OUT ON YOUR LISTING ON MARKETPLACE.

    • Do not block them out?

No offence, but which crap jap/kor car with that blown engine? toyoto!

    • Any car can have problems.

    • Why bother saying 'no offence'? Thats just a precursor to an offensive statement. Either make the offence or dont say it.

      • No offence but get a life mate!

  • Whatever you do, don’t put anything on for free. $1 minimum

  • Read up on Vic Road Transport Authority for your Legal requirements and options.

Only you know your exact situation.

    Sorta common sense really.

    • +1

The VicRoads website isn't very specific about situations where you're not transferring the rego. It has a lot of mentions of needing a scrapper certificate, which doesn't apply in this case for a private sale.

But ultimately it ended up as:
      - Cancel the registration (cut the plates in two, upload a photo of them to the VicRoads website in a destroyed condition)
      - Write up a receipt of sale, including the condition as unregistered and sold as is un-working
      - Remove e-tag

  • +1

And if you have a e-toll make sure you remove it…

    • Guess who forgot :-) $15 non return fee, ouch!

      • $15 is better than someone using it a lot!

My sister was checking hers one day and noticed a rego number that didn't belong to the family…no idea who or how they got on her account.
