  • How did you get additional $50 discount. Is there a code you used or it was automatically applied?

    • +1

You get 5% discount on your first purchase at the Samsung store via partnership program.

      • Is it applied automatically at the check out ?

      • Is it app only or on website as well?

    • Same as yourself, I'm not getting the $50 discount.

The account is new/signed up via government portal but not seeing anything.

Trying to access via the web. I tried using the Samsung App on Android but wasn't showing the discounted price at all.

      • Just spoke to Samsung chat.. they are saying that offer is now applicable only on phones. Website still says that discount applies to cart. Support agent said website is not updated. lol.

Ordering it anyway. Will follow-up with samsung later on.

        • Hah, I also spoke to Samsung Chat. They didn't mention anything about the offer being out-dated, just said it's for Mobile phones only and there's nothing they can do further.

Still a great price at $999, but would be ever nicer at $950.

Let me know if you manage to get the lower cost later, would be interested to try and follow-up myself.

For a $1k, you should not feel disappointed

    • +2

have you seen the price of a "proper" home theatre set up? or even a standalone sonos arc

        • +2

Out of interest, what would be your recommendation for a under $1k home sound system?

          • +2

@happyhappyhappy: yes.. .instead of shooting down a very well reviewed product why don't you provide some real alternatives for the same price or less instead. this is a soundbar, it's designed to be a "good enough" compact and easy to set up option for the non-audiophile - if you have a better suggestion, why don't you tell us instead of feeling smug

              • @glade90: I didn't make that post. what's your point?

            • +3

@glade90: a pair of T7V is already $750 or so.. how are you getting a full set up under 1k?

        • +2

You’re objectively wrong in the context of home theatre/surround sound. The Samsung 9 series bars with physical rears for 5.1 have always been about as good as you get for ~$1000.

For stereo music, absolutely there’s better options, including other soundbars even and certainly monitors.

Are they genuinely audiophile quality 11.4 reproduction…also no.

But for 5.1 even a vaguely decent amp/receiver is going to cost the same as one of these without any speakers.

You could get something that is comparable/slightly better (certainly larger drivers) for ~$3k but for something that is objectively, noticeably better you’re looking more like $6k+. And you’re well into the territory where the size/shape/acoustics of the room are going to be important and that’s just not something most people care about.

TLDR these aren’t for audiophiles, no.

For anyone looking for pretty solid surround sound without breaking the bank or dealing with size/cables everywhere…I genuinely challenge you to find better for the price.

          • -7

            @SanguinarySeraph:

            these aren’t for audiophiles, no.

Well well well, there, you agreed. I'm glad we are on the same page.

    • +1

Lol this is one person's opinion. I have a Q930D and think it is absolutely phenomenal

        • +4

wow, a whole thread of people sharing their disappointment out of the hundreds of thousands they've sold worldwide.

        • +1

Lol this is one person's opinion.

That's my entire point, you can't objectively sum up a product from a couple of online comments. You similarly find many people disagree with the OP in that thread, including the top reply.

The reality is the Q930/Q990 series are very well reviewed and are considered great bang for the buck. They are never going to replace a proper home theatre audio setup, and are priced accordingly.

    • I just got this soundbar and it’s blown my mind. Absolutely incredible!

    • +2

For most people this will be better than a standard home theatre. For pure quality a full super expensive home theatre will always be better. But the cost is much higher, there's the issue of running speaker cables everywhere, and it won't provide a cost vs quality improvement.

For 98% of people, this is the better option.

      • -5

For 98% of people, this is the better option.

With this I can agree. But also, 98% (or more) people have no idea what good sounds like, and they just prefer some muddy loud oomph over clarity.
For the 2% (or less) these are disappointing.
I personally don't care if someone buys these, or not, but it pains me that we've given up on proper audio and somehow arrived at the conclusion that these are "phenomenal" and "absolutely incredible". They are anything but

        • Any chance you could share some resources or a guide of where to get 'better' audio?
Where does one start with this? For example, when I'm shopping for a soundbar I would go to RTINGs and check out their testing.

What about shopping for a home theatre? Where do I look to see if a certain speaker is compatible with a certian receiver, for example?

Genuine question by the way, if you could share your knowledge it'd be great

          • @LilSlip: Ah darn the compatibility hell :/ I feel your pain. To be honest, I haven't been following the mostly marketing A/V trends that has been designed to lock you in to vendors (I'm looking at you HDR10 vs Dolby Vision).
RTINGs is a great source, they do very decent reviews on consumer equipment (but their pro-sumer and pro is lacking I think).

I would suggest researching a bit more what you are trying to do rather than what products are recommended. Getting off track here, but let's say you want some headphones or earphones so something that goes on your head :) You might jump on RTINGS and look at bluetooth IEMs and pick the best one, but maybe what you actually wanted was an open back headphone.

If you just want something that sounds OK and this is not your hobby, that's totally fine too - life is short, decide what you spend your time on, so a soundbar like this would make sense.

If you want to zoom out a bit and have different views on what could work with what and for what, sink some time into audiosciencereview.com and /r/BudgetAudiophile (the former one is fantastic to learn about what kinds of things define good audio in the first place)

        • +3

Yep, agreed. That's why I have $5,000 Jamo speakers paired with a $2,000 amp in my lounge room. I need the top quality. But I also know that at $5k the price per performance is pretty much non-existent.

That's why I say it's for 98% of people. 80% of people wouldn't notice the difference between this and the $5k speakers. Another 10% of the people couldn't tell the difference if they didn't listen to them back to back. And the last 8% would realise the difference is so small that it really isn't worth the 7 times cost.

          • +1

@GunnerMcDagget: Ha, Jamo! I haven't seen one in a long while. Did you bring them with you or bough them here?

            • @glade90: They've been around the house for many years. They were from the era when Jamo were still good. Now days, they Jamo aren't what they used to be

    • +1

What's your point? Even the best reviewed product will have negative reviews if you look for them. In fact here's a negative post about your favourite speakers https://www.reddit.com/r/WeAreTheMusicMakers/comments/cpwl7i…

BTW your $750 T7V studio monitor pair does not fill the needs of a 5.1 home cinema setup. So still keen to hear what your recommendation is for a 5.1 home cinema setup for 1k

      • -3

The person in your link described well they don't know how a monitor should sound like, and their preference is something else. That's fine by me.
Regarding your other questions about the allegedly true 11.1.4 channel Samsung bar which crams LCR into a 1m tube fills the needs of a 5.1 home cinema setup? That's very sweet :)

        • +3

still dodging question I see. No one is pretending the samsung is a true 11.1.4, we just want to know what you think is a set up that is a better value for <1k and so far you haven't come up with anything

          • +2

@May4th: Don't bother wasting any further brain cells on this one.

            • -7

@Maths Debater: Agreed. If you wasted even one more, you'd be down at zero. We can't let that happen

            • +1

@Maths Debater: welcome to another episode of how to embarrass yourself on the internet in 60 seconds

        • +3

Yes sweet indeed. And with the sub and rear speakers it does a lot more to fill the needs of a home cinema than your suggestion. And I'm not just arguing speaker count. So without any recommendations your comment is just audiophile wankery.

    • +1

You're fighting an uphill battle cuz. It's the best soundbar according to RTINGS: https://www.rtings.com/soundbar/reviews/best/soundbar
I know which link I would rather trust.

      • -8

what battle? do you think I care what the mullet population buys, who cannot even spell because?

        • +2

          1) I'll spare you the embarrassment with the term "cuz", I'm sure you'll figure it out one day.
          2) A sentence starts with a capital letter, also after a question mark.
          3) If you don't care what the "mallet" population buy, what was the purpose of your Reddit link?

          • -1

@Maths Debater: 1) surely you would understand when not to use certain terms, cuz your kind and my kind are not even remotely cuz. Or would you?

  • +1

Anyone with a magic ball predicting the price will drop further with the new model up? Tempted but unsure whether now is the time to pull the trigger.

    • +1

Search for Q990C sales last year. I don't think Q990D will go lower than that.
It will be sold out very quickly once Australian pricing for the new model Q990F released and people realise how much more expensive it is.
Also consider some remaining units in retail may go as replacement for the ones bricked by the recent firmware update fiasco.

  • +3

my HW-Q990D is Totally bricked, remote won't work, buttons won't work, can't reset. It basically only turns on and off, and even then, barely.
Apparently it was due to an automatic software update and all sound bars in e-arc mode got stuck and bricked.

Lots of refunds floating around, I think maybe due to supply? There's a facebook page also.

I dropped mine off for repair at the local on Tuesday 3 days ago.

    • I dropped my q800d yesterday, the guy said they'd had a lot and that it wouldn't take them long to fix it by either replacing the motherboard or reprogramming it. Refund was not an option for me, Harvey Norman said repair.

      • That's interesting

My guy hadn't heard of the issue at all

    • What's the facebook group so I can keep tabs?

  • +1

Is there any way to get access to the EPP, without actually having a job that provides the perk?

Edit: Answered my own question. Does not look like it. Old Unidays account that had the student portal still has it at $1299

  • Yeah student portal isn’t as heavily reduced, I’ll ask to see if they will match

    • They wouldn’t match this deal but offered an additional 10% voucher

  • +1

Bugger. I got one of these last week from TGG for $1150 and thought I got a good deal. For $200 less, this is a great deal.

  • Good price for a great soundbar

  • +1

great Sound Bar, Good price I have the 30 and its fantastic. Will never compete with a complete setup but at the price point they offer a fantastic experience 100x in builts

  • +1

Just price matched to JB Hi-Fi, saves me from waiting for postage!

    • How? And how can I grab an affiliate portal? Would love to grab this

      • +2

Over the phone and was kind/respectful to the sales person. Told him that I was looking to buy this online and thought I'd call the store and see if they would price match so I didn't have to wait for postage. When he asked for a link I told him to google "OzBargain Q990D". After a short wait he was happy to do it.

Good manners goes a long way!

        • Lovely and good on the bloke for price matching. I'll try at my local and see how I do..if you are happy to, msg through the receipt - think it could get it over the line if it's ok with you

        • Well done! I'm surprised they even entertained the idea of matching EPP. Never hurts to ask!

          • @Maths Debater: Wonder if it helped being a soundbar - coming from this AMA/Sales comment
            https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/15862777/redir

Could be something else now, but when I worked at JB a decade ago one of the key stats was IPS - items per sale, i.e. ability to package/upsell accessories/additional items. Sound equipment generally had huge mark-ups too, a $600 sound bar could have almost as much margin as the TV itself, so you could up your IPS by giving a bit of a package deal whilst maintaining a decent margin.

Either way, win for the consumer!

        • Update:

I bought this to replace my aging Yamaha YSP-2700 system. Still works great but thought this would be a good upgrade.
Bought the Q990D home and setup but was a bit disappointed that it's not really a massive upgrade (considering the price)!

My use case is unlike others as it's just being used in a living room area and not a dedicated theatre, so I don't think I get the full intended surround experience. I am also pretty fussy cause I don't wanna spend $1k for an unnoticeable upgrade.

Ended up putting it all nicely back into the box and back to JB for a full refund. Maybe one day I'll invest in some bookshelf speakers and a dedicated sub for a better living room setup.

  • Last few left before it goes out of stock.

  • Still loving my Q950A precursor for $690 - love these things - might upgrade next model ;)

  • I will throw this promo code here.
whoever uses it first gets it. Good luck. ^^

    V15-HD59-T5EW-RRZL

    • It might be missing a character :)

  • +1

Just a word of caution, I have one and it’s great until it stopped working. A recent software update that happened last weekend bricked all the 990Ds worldwide.

You can Google “Samsung soundbar bricked” which will show a whole bunch of news articles and discussions on Reddit and Samsung’s own forums.

I was told to send to a service centre locally which they have indicated that the motherboard needs replacing but because so many units were affected, there is very short supply on the motherboards and it can take weeks to get the part in.

    • After seeing this i turned off wifi updates….im still on old software. Thanks

    • Thanks for pointing this out - hadn't even known I could update mine! Don't remember connecting it to wifi or anything either so didnt even realise there were auto updates possible.

  • Doesn't let me check out. Shows error had in my cart and disappeared all of sudden !

  • I had Q990C before. While the sound was great, the satellite speakers keeps disconnecting every 1-2 weeks which requires me to factory reset the whole sound bar to reconnect everything again. I tried to bring it back to JB but this issue is not easily reproducible on the spot, so they only offer to bring it back to Samsung which they can't guarantee the timeframe. I ended up selling it again after lots of frustration.

Not sure if this has been fixed on Q990D, but this issue has happened a lot on Q990B and Q990C before.

  • I've had this soundbar for the past few months. It's truly something special to have a complete sound experience that suits all my needs.

  • Does the speaker work without updates like out of the box? I don't like software updates on things that don't need it like TV.

Keen to get but I hate mandatory wifi set up, creating an account

    • +1

Yeah you can - I didn't even realise there were software updates for it. Set it up, connected to HDMI ARC (LG TV) and off we went. Works great

  • +1

I had the Q990A, which had a problem with a satellite speaker and board where it wouldnt connect to the sound bar at times and would stay dropped out. Got a full refund.
Had the Q990B for about 2 years now, no issues, plugged in via e-arc to a sony X90 series tv.
Compared to other soundbar packages, this is the best bang for buck at 1k - as it comes with satellite speakers and a sub.
I tested out at jb hifi and other stores different soundbars, it really comes down to personal preference of sound output. Checked many reviews on youtube, the Q990 series is still the best package on the market under 3k imo.
The sound experience is very immersive for tv, movies and games, and though some soundbars like the bose and sonos are better for music, this does a great job.
Unless you are comparing the sound of each soundbar daily, Q990 along with other soundbars (paired with a subwoofer) on the market should more than satisfy a home theatre need in small to medium rooms.
