Port a Prepaid Mobile Number on Saturday

We have several prepaid services expiring today, I assume they will work until midnight and can still receive text message (verification codes) after midnight.

Plan is to port them to another service provider tomorrow (Saturday) morning, does number porting happen on Saturdays? Would like to avoid not having working mobile services for the entire weekend.

In case it depends on both port out and port in providers, they are:

  • Coles Mobile -> More Mobile
  • Coles Mobile -> Vodafone -> Coles Mobile

It will work on a Saturday. Its automated. But if something goes wrong you'll be a bit screwed until Monday.

    prepaid services expiring today

port now. Avoid the headache of weekend porting.

  • Some of the users are older relos, I need to go to them to get it done.

Kind of think about it, the Vodafone one needs to be prioritised today, I recall they require a reply text with the verification code rather than entering it online. Can't send text tomorrow.

It will be automated so doesn't matter which day really, but the only problem is if some details don't match such as a middle name or incorrect address etc and it needs some kind of manual intervention.

  • seems like a situation where problems could be more easily avoided by some better planning

  • The Vodafone one is done, can confirm port in still requires to text back the verification code, which is a blocker on expired service. Maybe there's way around it, but the automated process is to reply with text.

There was a mishap in our case, I called my uncle to tell him about he will receive a text message with a 7-digit code, reply to that message with the code to authorise the port out. I specifically told him not to text anything else, just the code. He added "thank you" to the message, which invalidated the request. I had to call support, on hold for 20 minutes, to get them to send another code. Guess what? The second time he added "hi" to message. Called support again, added him to the same call, support sent the third message and confirmed it was responded correctly.

The actually porting happened successfully and quickly.

I inadvertently entered the verification number incorrectly during one of my previous ports. I re-entered the correct number subsequently and the porting process started to proceed with the SIM dropping to SOS within minutes.

Unless there have been recent modifications, I am fairly certain you can just type the correct code in again without calling the provider.

In essence, by sending "392113 hello", it will not register it has been typed correctly, but subsequently sending "392113" again should allow it to port.

      • Ah! Didn't think of that, system responded to the reply saying one-time code did not match. We read it there was only one shot, probably re-send just the code would have worked.

If the number does become inactivated, the current service provider is still obligated to allow the port out, according to ACMA. Guess that means they need to assist to make it happen, including temporarily allow sending text messages. But largely a manual process.

  • Cheers for the post. My 1yr plan ends tomorrow, was going to port then, but just did it now.
    Going from Boost to WWmobile.

  • I ported from Coles to Catch Xmas Day or Boxing Day and process was done in 15mins.

  • Thanks all, have taken your advice and got them renewed today. All done.
