eSIM Combined with Roaming?

We’re doing an overseas trip and are on Aldi 12 month prepaid mobile plans that do not include roaming (but you can add it (50c/minute for all calls and 50c for sending texts, and 50c/MB (paid for from a separate prepaid PAYG stash))).

We plan to get eSIMs (for data) and would want to turn off data for the Aldi roaming (but keep calls and SMS).

So, the question is, can we independently turn mobile data off for our normal SIMs but have it on for the eSIM (in a Samsung A55 and an iPhone Xr)?

  • S24 owner here. Yes. Dont have a55 or iphone. So cant tell you if it works for thoae phones.

  • S25U owner here. Yes it would most likely work as long as your phone is dual sim.

When you have 2 sim cards, you get additional settings in the notification swipe down (can also access them in SIM manager). This will select which default sim to use for outgoing calls/sms. But as long as it is active, you can still receive calls and sms from the secondary sim.

My old S23U only allowed 1 active esim at a time, so I had to use physical for the second. Looks like aldi is physical only so you should be good.

Data (and calls/SMS) is generally only active on 1 sim at a time. The 2nd sim is only for calls/SMS, no data.

See slide 14/15 for your phone on selecting which sim to use for data.

  • When travelling overseas I use my boost sim VoWiFi using a local data sim purchased from airalo. lets me make and receive calls and sms from my aus number with no roaming fees. AFAIK it will only work with Telstra or boost sims and your phone has to be compatible.

Im on Aldi pre paid and have used Esims a couple of times overseas and its fine. You just select the new E Sim for data and turn off data on the Aldi SIM. Enable roaming and you are set.

Voice over WiFi works so you can make and receive calls and SMS from the Aldi SIM over Wifi but I have never been able to do the Voice over the data sim though - maybe network related but the icon has never appeared for me unless connected to Wifi.
