Car Insurance Renewal - AAMI Far Cheaper than Any of The Comparison Site Offers

Car #1 up for renewal and I did the usual comparison rounds
AAMI was less than half of the price of the comparison websites
(and silver medal to GIO),
AAMI and GIO are not listed on the comparison websites but are far cheaper than all the others
Just a heads up for anyone who is looking around to ensure you include AAMI and GIO in your comparisons

Some details, so your results may be different:
Fully comprehensive cover, no add ons
Mazda CX-9
Market value coverage
Every driver is over 25 and
There was a crash in last 3 years (other driver's fault but still needs to be listed)
Update: Suburban Melbourne driveway parking

I tried:
iSelect - cheapest was ~$1770+ with Budget Direct, Virgin was next with ~$1900
Compare the Market - cheapest was exact same as above, Everyday/Woolworths was ~1790
Youi renewal was $1250
Virgin was $1900+
Allianz was over $2100 wtf!

but:
GIO was pretty good, under $1100
AAMI was ~$850, less than half the price of the comparison websites!

Shouldn't you also add the market value set and or fixed value?

    There's arguably just as important

    • Done, and updated some other variables in the original post too

How do you think the comparison websites make money? 😉

    • Understood there's a commission but surely not as huge as that, their cheapest offer is over twice the AAMI price

    Username checks out

  • Feel free to share any bad experiences with the listed companies to explain the cheaper quote….

    • I’ve no experience with AAMI so far, are you suggesting their service will be worse just because they’re cheaper?

      My Experience:
GIO was second cheapest quote for me this time.
~15 Years ago I got hail damage in Perth, my insurer was GIO, absolutely no issues with claim and repairs

Virgin was second most expensive quote for me this time
      they are Auto & General.
Someone bumped into me recently, their insurer was “Qantas”, which is Auto & General, I had loads of issues and arguments getting repairs agreed

Are the excess values all the same?

    • Yes, as close as possible, otherwise my comparison doesn’t make sense

Some had differences like you could choose that every driver is over 30, 40 or even 50. Whereas others had over 25s as the highest age to nominate.
So someone over 50 might be able to get a better deal with one of those insurers that I wouldn’t be able to get,

  • I also found AAMI to be HEAPS cheaper. Not sure why. Had one claim too and that was pretty smooth, so no reason to consider others at the moment.

    • I think it’s always worth taking 15-30 mins every year just to check.

  • Had AAMI for home insurance and had a claim that was dealt with easily.

They nailed me upon renewal, so I migrated to GIO. But was quite happy with AAMI

  • This time, my insurance went up $200 with AAMI so Virgin Money became the cheapest (so the increase is just under $100) HOWEVER, not like to like:
    1. Fixed value downgraded by $4,600
    2. Excess up by $200

I got 10k Vpoint and new car replacement.

  • I recently insured an older car. Price comparisons had $8xx for TPP, and over $1200 for comp. My existing insurer wasnt on the comparison sites, but i got a comprehensive policy for $880ish.

  • Wife needs to get car insurance renewed soon and I was going the round up of all the “major” insurers and AAMI was by far the most expensive one of the lot. And I am not talking by a little, I am talking it was almost $1,000 more than the next lowest price.

GIO wasn’t too bad, it was a little above the middle of the range, but way cheaper than AAMI.

    • Interesting, I wonder how we compare on the risk charts
The message is, it pays to compare against as many as reasonably possible

  • Im noticing AAMI spitting out significantly cheaper values then other insurers also - it sucks that they force there own repairer though.

RACV, ALLIANZ, YOUI, SUNCORP, GIO all wanted ABOVE 2.5k PA to insure a Agreed Value 2022 car at 50k. AAMI 1.3K with replacement windscreen option ticked.

Given no claims in 10 years of driving, I could not justify the price of the other ones and hope that I didnt need to deal with capital smart.

    • It’s fascinating that Aami is seeing something very low risk in your situation, and mine, that the others cannot
Or that the others have lost so much money in Queensland that they’re trying to get it back from me and you!

  • Updated post to include geographical info
There are many variables of course
My message is just to let the ozbargainers know/be reminded that it’s always worth shopping around,
I saved $400 over my renewal offer so would be worth a few hours effort, but it only took me less than half an hour to compare them all.

  • Aami has been the cheapest for me for car and house, by far, oddly enough the renewals are cheaper than new quotes. This year my home renewal went up to $1.9k from $1.2k, but everywhere else was quoting me $3k+. Big sad when I used to get it for under $1k few years ago…

  • Greg disagrees. Can't stand insurance companies, and corporate greed, in general.

  • Have you tried Bingle(part of Suncorp)?

    • I didn’t but will add it to my comparisons for car #2, thanks

  • Do you get the same figures as the comparison sites if you do a quote with the insurance company directly on their own site?
