New Carpet Stinks after I Cleaned It

I purchased the ProHeat 2X Revolution Pet carpet cleaner a year ago and I ruined my new carpet with it.

I put too much formula solution the first time I used it and I’ve gone over it every few weeks with vinegar, water etc and it still stinks. I don’t even have pets but this carpet cleaner was meant to be the best.

I’m not sure what to try next…

Wonder what tomorrows journal entry will be

Have you tried getting a professional carpet cleaner in?

    • +1

Nah, I reckon another 12 months of the vinegar scrub will sort it out.

    • My ozbargain side is trying to avoid this after spending over $500 on that damn carpet cleaner but it looks like I will need to.

Nothing wrong with the carpet cleaner mate, it was the user who stuffed up.

      • I put too much formula solution the first time I used it

        User error

  • help us help you: stinks of what

    • Like dirty socks mixed with perfume

      • Adding some perfume now to my dirty socks to get the full lived experience.

Is there a particular fragrance I should use? Mrs Paint has quite the collection.

        • Like an old lady perfume maybe rose mixed with socks and I wish I was joking

      Vinegar I'm guessing…

        Vinegar makes scents. Cheers

  • Carpet deodorisers are a thing. They work quite well.

    baking soda

This does work pretty well, so you could try this if you have a powerful vacuum cleaner.

Costco sells the large 9kg bags of baking soda if you have access to one of their warehouses.

This can work quite well depending on the source of the smell. Sprinkle bicarbonate of soda over carpet. Brush it around with a clean broom. Leave it for several hours or even a day. Dry vacuum it up.

      • I’ll try this thanks

    What would Pro Hart do?

    • I'm not sure but I know what Pro Shart would do.

    • What a messss
      .

Bicarb , leave for a day, vacuum it up.

Next time you wash your carpets be sure it dries quickly. Wash early in the day, leave windows open, put a fan in.

  • and I ruined my new carpet with it.

At least you know the issue.

So now, try using just clean water in the machine, nothing else.

How dirty does the water look that you take out of it after a clean?

Carpet cleaning can 'lift' old stains/dirt/smells from the bottom to the top.

Do a few repeat cleans until the water is looking cleaner, but make sure you dry the carpets quickly otherwise they'll go yuk. So turn a heater on and put a fan around to move the air to dry them.

Otherwise you might need to bite the bullet and get a professional in to clean it.

There is a secret cleaning method not many people know about. You have to rub about 100kg of fresh dog poo into it and leave it to sit for about a month. This will get the smell out. You will have to travel to a lot of dog parks to collect this much.

I mean it would definitely change the smell

  • As usual, you're telling us a part of the story but not the whole story, right? You don't have pets, but you bought a carpet cleaner designed to clean carpet in a house with…. PETS.

    Sure.

    I vote for insurance arson.

You need to say whether it smells like carpet cleaner or vinegar or damp/mould. All different causes (although the first two probably have a similar solution)

    • Carpet cleaner and dirty socks so maybe that mildew or mould

      • dirty sock smell sounds like the carpet wasnt properly dried after cleaning. Eventually it will dry out but hopefully no long lasting consequences. I assume it doesnt feel damp when you dig your fingers into is?

        • It’s not damp but it’s left a sticky residue. I’ve gone over it with water 5 times over a few weeks so it can dry each time.

  • this carpet cleaner was meant to be the best.

Seems like a you problem, not the carpet cleaner.

    I don’t even have pets

Then why'd you use a product specifically made for pets?

    • It had 5 star reviews and was the cheapest carpet cleaner compared to the professional ones

      • +1

Those are irrelevant to the fact that you stated you used too much of the solution.

  • -1

yeah but renters should be entitled to pets bro they dont damage or ruin someone else's property

  • Probably left damp too long

sprinkle bi-carb soda all over the carpet. Broom it in to the pile. Leave a couple of hours. Dry vacuum
